once a week you need a hot 90 wash with nothing in the machine to keep the pong away ime.
the first one, bung a cup of bleach in the drum first, then do the 90 weekly with an empty machine.
before i used cloth i got this smell as i always washed at 30 or 40 if i could, green see... but since having to wash pooped nappies at 60 i dont get the smell.
if the machine does not get used hot from time to time, it starts to reek.

i do open it whenever he's not around, but it already reeks by that point. yukky cheesey thing!

You are not really going to stop the smell if you cant leave the door open.

My OH works in the appliance industry and he recommends doing a maintenance wash once a month. Put your machine on at its highest temp empty and use a decent Bio powder.

Why does liquid make it worse, Enid??? Would have thought it would be the other way around, but am intrigued to know as we have a stinky washing machine and do use liquid.

traceukw1 · 11/06/2007 23:53

Liquid is not good for a number of reasons, the reason it can make the machine smell is because liquids do not have chlorine bleaching agents in them. So if all you use is a liquid detergent the machine is going to smell a bit ripe after awhile especially if you do not do any maintenance wash.

Also liquids are very prone to over-dosing which leads to a build up of congealed gunk which sticks to the drum and various other parts of the machine and hence the machine breaks.

All in all liquids are not good best to stick with powder.
