Help! I can smell cat pee :(

For a week, there is a really strong smell of cat pee in my living room.
I don’t have a cat
I have a child but she’s 13 and doesn’t have accidents (nor does my husband!)
No cat has been in
I am very clean and tidy and have cleaned carpet and sofas to no avail
Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you stop it? It’s making me gag!
Thanks for any suggestions Smile

Do you have any electric switches? Sniff them as burning plastic can smell

MustDust · 20/09/2018 14:41

Our windows leak and make the windowsills smell like this, we're going to have to get a builder in to fix it.

Flamingle · 20/09/2018 14:43

I have sniffed all the electrics - no smell. It’s a new build so I wouldn’t expect any damp or leaky windows.
It’s driving me insane

Have you painted recently? Valspar paint had an issue with a cat pee smell, it happened to me an I claimed compensation.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/09/2018 14:44

Could a cat be sneaking in?
Or could it be a rat?
Have you recently decorated as I remember a thread where the paint was making an unbearable smell?
My sympathies as I have very strong sense of smell and very fast gag reflex!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/09/2018 14:45

oh cross post with SOuper re paint

Nike trainers or any sports shoes.
They often used to smell like cats pee.

chickenfeathers · 20/09/2018 14:53

Do you have an exterior door / patio door leading into your living room? I once lived in a house where the local Tom cat used to spray up the front door - the smell was awful inside the house. It took loads of Jeyes Fluid to get rid of the smell, and eventually the cat wandered off to do his stuff elsewhere!

QforCucumber · 20/09/2018 14:53

front door?! our neighbours cat was spraying up our front door - it stank!

Fannyfanakerpants · 20/09/2018 14:53

Paint? Is it worse when it's warm? Or flowers. I think lillies smell like cat pee.

Flamingle · 20/09/2018 14:58

Thank you for your suggestions. I’m going to get my gloves and some Jeyes fluids and clean outside just in case I’ve had a cat spraying around my front door. It’s actually minging. If that doesn’t work I’m getting industrial cleaners in!! Grin

Do you have any plants that may smell weird?

Evenstar · 20/09/2018 15:04

Football boots and trainers can smell like this when they are wet, also bizarrely orange and mango squash and certain “tropical” scented cleaning products.

Flamingle · 24/09/2018 14:32

The smell has gone now Smile
Thank you for all your suggestions

How did it go?! What did you use? I was going to say Noke shoes. My son’s’ football boots stink when even a tiny bit wet. Thought it was my elder son but both older and younger boots smell

Flamingle · 26/09/2018 08:49

I washed all around my front door and I steamed my carpet again and scrubbed my sofa again. I can only think that a cat sprayed my door and it got in through the cracks. I think washing the front door ultimately got rid of it. My daughter has nike trainers but they didn’t stink.

I used to smell strong cat pee in my car, the neighbour cat had sprayed on it and when I turned the heating vents on in the mornings, it all came in the car. lovely.

Flamingle · 26/09/2018 09:45

Ugh that’s gross
The smell was actually making me heave!
