How not to ruin DD's jumper in the wash!

It's her favourite Zara jumper- made of I know not what as she insists on cutting out labels (grrr!) but it is as soft and furry as a cuddly toy on the outside - in fact we call it her teddy bear jumper! (Actually much nicer than it sounds - it's a lovely wine colour with striped neckline and cuffs... Anyway I digress.) It needs a wash but she is really worried it will lose its lovely softness and she won't want to wear it again if anything happens to it. You know how sweatshirts have that lovely cosy soft lining that is always lost after the first wash and it never feels the same again? It's that sort of scenario. Any tips would be welcome...
