Cleaning duvet before using it or when you put it away?

I am trying to establish a routine here and I am a bit puzzled. Do you wash your duvet when you change it or do you put it away and you wash it before using it?
It's now time to swap my summer one for the winter one. Do I wash the summer one now and put it away or do I put it away and wash it next spring?
The cupboard where I store them makes them smell a bit stale after few months, so I am inclined to leave them there 'dirty' until when it's time to put them on....but it goes against all my cleaning principles ha ha!!

What do you normally do?

Well I tend to wash them as I pack them away. But then I get them out again when the season changes and can’t remember if I washed them or not so wash again anyway.

It doesn’t seem right to put them away without washing really Confused

I just have the same one all year round. I am however a sweaty beast so we just have a light 4.5 tog that stays on all year round. If it drops to an unreasnably cold temperature for us, a blanket gets added for some extra weight.

Personally I would wash before putting away and before putting on again if its going into storage

Always wash before storage as the idea of a slightly sweaty duvet in storage is a bit grim to me. As I always wash before storage that's not an issue but with duvet and pillows on the spare bed ( live in a drawer under the bed as it's a daybed) I just put a note on the calendar to wash them if they have been used....otherwise I would never remember
Also IKEA Dimpa bags are brilliant for duvet and pillow storage

Wash before storage. Then a shake and air before use.

Never put away a dirty thing, be it duvet, clothes, pots or anything else.

I would wash before storing then store it in a sealed vacuum bag.

before putting it away.
