Solid worktops

Two questions... firstly, if the solid worktop you are buying comes in a particular length and you need less, can they cut and sell you a smaller length (and so you pay less) or do you have to buy the whole chunk and have it cut down? And secondly, does it look ok with joins? We need about 4 metres for one length and I haven't seen in that length before.
Thanks in advance!

If you are talking Corain type worktops, I don't believe you can just cut it down as a) it is incredibly hard and b) it needs to be sealed/polished/buffed/whatever to justify the enormous price. I think you are getting into bespoke territory here. We are looking at granite atm & that involves templates and other scarey stuff...

I'm thinking of granite and quartz...
