Musty smell after washing cotton knit cardigan - any solutions?

My husband has a quite heavy cotton cardigan. The last few times its been machine washed it has ended up with a damp and musty smell, even when it has been dried outside.
Any ideas as to what we can do to avoid this - it is a favourite item (and he doesn't have many bless him!)? We don't have a tumble drier.

Two things that you need to do, when you wash it use fabric conditioner as this will smooth down the fibres and leave a more pleasant smell and as hot as the instructions allow. Then make sure you wash it on a hot and windy day so it will dry properly.

You might also find it useful to use the old fashioned method of stringing up. Using a length of soft cord or washing line, Make a scarf loop over the washing line, slip the cord through the neck of the sweater or cardigan then run each end of the cord through each sleeve and tie off onto the washing line. This means that the sleeves will dry at the same rate as the body and will not stretch with gravity.

Hope that helps a little.
