Cleaning carpets?

THis is going to sound pathetic but I've never actually done this before without using a machine or paying someone to do it. But we had a BBQ on Saturday and everyone traipsed up and down stairs to the bathroom all day and the stair carpet is black in places. Don't want to hire a machine just for that. How?

The trouble is with spot traeting is that you will see clean patches where you have cleaned the dirt off - I think you need to use a machine to get an even effect really.

i agree- i had to spot scrub my cream bedroom carpet at the weekend and although the 'unbudgable' stain came out, dh had to go and get the rug doctor because there were white spots around the room!

I use 1001 large surface cleaner on my stairs with a scrubbing brush. It's fab stuff the only carpet cleaner I've found that actually works

Thanks all.

Particularly Madwelshwoman! I honestly didn't know how to go about it . Scrubbing brush and 1001. Got it!

Next question. How do you get the cleaner out of the carpet after you've scrubbed it? Or do you just leave it to dry?
