My rug stinks

Hi, I have a lovely polyester rug.

I got a puppy about 7 months ago... the puppy had lots of accidents on the rug. He is now completely house trained but the rug is left stinking!

I have hung it on the line, sprayed it with many, many nice smelling things. I have cleaned it with my vax carpet cleaner. Covered it in bicarbonate of soda 3 times overnight..nothing seems to get the smell out.

Does anyone have any tips please? It's such a nice rug and to get it professionally cleaned will be more then the price of the rug itself!

You can't mask urine odour you need to break it down so you need one of the following:

  1. Simple Solution Carpet shampoo
  2. Bio washing powder (not non-bio) - it can't be done with a vax though.
  3. White Vinegar (distilled Malt) at least 50/50 mix with water (I'd use more vinegar the worse it is)

It doesn't cost much to have someone come in and clean it, prob thirty quid, as such, if it costs less than that why not just replace it.

Wash the rug.
I have washed rugs in the washing machine or if it is too big, in the bath.
Soak in tepid water with zoflora and stardrops.
Rinse, rinse and rinse.
Hang on washing line or flat on airer on a sunny day.

I agree with breaking down the urine in order to get rid of the smell. The simple solution stuff works really well - I used to use it to clean up after our elderly dog.
