Cleaning granite worktops

Moving house soon and the new house has granite worktops which I've never had before. Black. Hard water area. Do I need to avoid normal products?

We moved into a house with black granite and the previous owner left some method granite spray
It's amazing!!!
It smells Devine too!!! I just spray a bit and sort of buff it with a dry cloth!
Love it!

Absolutely agree. The method granite cleaner does a lovely job & smells great too.

intuition · 22/07/2018 20:00

I just use hot as you can handle hot water on an 'e cloth'

andalittlebitofpixiedust · 22/07/2018 20:17

Oooh, thanks all. Do I need to avoid anything?

Don’t let acids like lemon juice lie. Black granite is amazing. Ours is perfect after 10 years. No hot pans. I use ordinary detergent like fairy liquid and Method for a special shine.

notapizzaeater · 22/07/2018 20:21

I use a karcher window vac on mine, brings it up fab

Scotlass · 22/07/2018 20:23

Don't use normal kitchen sprays on it
I use washing up liquid on a sponge, towel it off the a bit of method granite spray, soft dry cloth to buff and it sparkles.
Looks lovely

No hot pans???? The mind boggles! I'll have to get a surface protector I guess?

Method is 3 for £6 at the moment in Tesco
Bargain as it's normally £4 a bottle!!!

Hahayoulooked · 24/07/2018 10:01

I wash down the granite with soapy water and use furniture polish, which gives it a lovely shine. And I always put my hot pans or straight from the oven dishes on the granite.

Enervator · 08/08/2018 15:13

Thanks so much for this everyone. I am getting the hang of it and drilling into the other family members that they need to be careful!!

Buffed my enormous clear expanse of black granite before leaving the house today and felt all smug. Halo

gobbin · 08/08/2018 18:47

I would never risk putting a hot pan on v expensive granite. It can crack (rare, but possible). We have Silestone and always use a trivet. Got the one below which is a good size for not much cash.

This IKEA trivet for just £3

MsSquiz · 08/08/2018 19:55

I've been guilty of putting pans and trays straight out of the oven onto the granite work top... it can withstand pretty decent heat.

I also use the method granite cleaner, smells lovely and is non toxic

greathat · 08/08/2018 20:25

I use the method stuff and just got the three bottle deal from Tesco

Chewbecca · 08/08/2018 20:32

Hmm, I love my black granite precisely because I don't need to be careful. I put hot pans on it all the time, any old spray, any food stuff and no matter what I have done, it stills looks as new.

When I want to make it gleam, I also use the method cleaner.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 08/08/2018 22:03

No hot pans? It’s stone. Grin

It does mark though. I’ve got a granite splash back behind my gas hob and over the years the flames have left scorch marks.

My granite is pale with flecks in. It’s a pain in the arse to keep clean because you can’t see the crumbs. You think it’s clean and then you get down to eye level and it’s covered in crumbs.

gobbin · 08/08/2018 22:36

No hot pans? It’s stone

It’s still susceptible to thermal shock, even so. I’d cry if mine cracked for the want of a trivet!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 08/08/2018 22:37

I’d cry if a piece of stone over an inch thick cracked from one pan. I’d want my bloody money back.

Has anyone got any advice on getting limescale off granite work tops? The usual suspects like viakal etc all day not suitable for this kind of surface Sad

I've always put hot pans etc on mine ...

Lakeland Worktop Wonder is the business for cleaning and protecting it, leaves a lovely shine - use a microfibre cloth
