So thanks to the cleaning vids thread I’ve been watching a few —too many— cleaning videos and the American ones seem to use cleaning products that they say smell good.

I’m a bit of the cheapest will do kind of girl but they don’t always smell amazing so which ones can you recommend?

In my attempt to reduce my use of plastic, I've started making my own cleaning products. I did a bit of this years ago, but it's easier now because the ingredients can be obtained in bulk online. Obviously, there are road miles involved and quite a bit of plastic in what I have delivered, but it will make gallons of spray cleaners.

There are lots of recipes online, but best degreaser and cleaner so far has been vinegar and a little cornflour heated and mixed with washing up liquid, soda crystals and peppermint oil. I have also made a lemon spray which is less effective but ideal for wiping worktops and so on.

Not for everyone, I know, but you can use the scents you like, and adapt recipes to what you need. It's obviously much cheaper than buying branded cleaners too. Lots of recipes online, and most just require you to measure ingredients and shake the bottle.

I buy all Method cleaning products and flash with bleach.
Method Kitchen Citrus
Method Bathroom
Method Floor Cleaner Almond - smells like cherry bakewells
Method toilet cleaner but it's a bit expensive

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/07/2018 18:14

I went to Tesco today and they have an offer on sone of the Method products. It might be —is very— sad but I’m enjoying using them already Smile

Best tip I got from one of those american cleaning vids (which I am hooked on) - flat head mop, wet and wrung, few drops of essential oil. Run all over wooden floors. Place smells divine!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/07/2018 18:32

I didn’t even know that cleaning videos were a thing @NapQueen until I saw the thread on them, now I’m ever so slightly hooked Blush

I also put some cat litter sprinkled with an essential oil (bergamot, lavender, tea tree etc.) into the bottom of the bin as a deodoriser and also into the Hoover bag - it makes it smell nice as you vacuum!

mrsoutnumbered · 19/07/2018 06:54

I really like Astonish products. They are cheap, cruelty free and do a great job!

I have zoflora in a spray bottle that I mainly use for cleaning the bin, cleaning the food caddy and cleaning up vomit. I don't use it for much else.

I love method but it is expensive.

Ooh, thanks for that! I’d nearly run out so just had a Tesco delivery on the strength of it (made up the value with wine Grin)

JiltedJohnsJulie · 19/07/2018 21:24

No worries. Enjoy your wine Smile

For me Zoflora goes in washing machine mainly.
Flash bathroom
Flash kitchen
Wilco kitchen wipes
Shops own value disinfectant for toilets.
Harpic limescale toilet liquid get when offer for £1, and it is necessary as hard water area.
Shops own make floor stuff for mopping floors
Shops own make bleach

CocoaGin70 · 20/07/2018 20:06

Zoflora is a load of old bollocks. It's a nauseating smell, really artificial and it doesn't actually "do" anything. I use baby sterilising tablets for soaking the dishcloth in the sink..... cleans both and disinfects. And about 60p for a massive box.

Astonish paste from all good bargain stores is amazing - hobs, bathrooms, ovens..... we go through pots and pots of it.

Jsd1975 · 21/07/2018 08:06

Elbow grease does every job round the house big or small would not be without 😊

mrsoutnumbered · 21/07/2018 09:23

Dettol Disinfectant spray is coming in very handy this morning! My youngest has a vomiting bug.

nicslackey · 21/07/2018 09:33

Another vote for Method grapefruit and rhubarb which are 3 for £6 at Tesco at the moment. I really, really hate the smell of all Zoflora. Where do you get Elbow Grease as this is a new one on me? I am also a big fan of the Astonish paste but raging that the tubs are now 1/3 of their size for the same price

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/07/2018 09:48

When posters started mentioning Elbow Grease I thought they were saying that I didn’t need products, just needed to rub harder GrinBlush

Elbow grease 95p from home bargains ...does the work for you all you do is spray leave on then wipe 😁
ESP on cooker hoods extractors might need a few goes but comes up like new 😁
For water marks use viakall it’s smells strong tho and don’t mix with other products ...

Pink grapefruit is the brilliant grease killer (multi-purpose spray).
Rhubarb is the anti-bac, less effective on grease IME but good for cleaning up before/after food prep.

Jsd1975 · 21/07/2018 13:43

Let’s have a cleaning party at mine tonight fetch all your products and some beverages and let’s put this to the test 😂

And loving chatting thank you 😊

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/07/2018 14:46

No problem. It just made me laugh that you’d invite me to come around and clean. Of all my talents, I think housekeeping is the most under used Grin

Jsd1975 · 21/07/2018 14:54

My house needs a good top to bottom not much fun doing it all on your own ... I think I need an army to motivate me 😂

ItsHot · 21/07/2018 15:31

I’ve just ordered this Elbow Grease stuff based on this thread. So it had better work or I’m coming for you all!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/07/2018 17:00
