Need help with a damp carpet

Decided to clean part of a carpet, a couple of days ago. The carpet, obviously didn't dry properly and change in weather hasn't helped. Went in this morning and the room smelled musty and dampish.

What can I put on the carpet or do to help the smell. Will obviously need to dry the carpet properly as soon as possible. What is the best thing to put on for the smell. Can't replace the carpet as it isn't an option, we are hoping to move shortly. Help needed.

I'm amazed nobody has suggested 'sprinkling it with bicarb, leaving it to absorb the smell, and then vacuuming it off'. Mumsnet is obsessed with bicarb. You ask about weaning and someone will suggest bicarb. Anyway, enough of that.

Have you managed to keep the windows open today - it's been very warm here in Sussex. And/or put the heating on to speed up the drying.

Have it washed professionally, it will remove the smell and perhaps remove a good part of the wetness. When they come to do ours it normally take a couple of hours to dry even in the worse of winter.
