Tell me about your robot vacuum

I’m teetering on the edge of a robot vacuum purchase. I’ve all hard floors downstairs, two young children who seem to shed crumbs and two cats. I need to vacuum every day to keep the floors bearable (not something I manage) so please tell me your robot vacuum is the solution to all my problems

Ours is a Eufy, so not top of the range. She is programmed to run round downstairs at 3am. She is often set to go during the day too. When she's done, she heads back to her charger and takes a couple of hours before ready to go again. Upstairs, isn't so good because there are a lot of obstacles.

You do need a clear floor - trailing flexes, shoe laces etc can stop them in their tracks. Otherwise, they just bump along the edges of something larger. When I mentioned getting one, the family said it wouldn't be worth having. They're not saying that now.

needyourlovingtouch · 04/07/2018 22:37

So it's worth it? Worried one won't have much suction and won't have much capacity

rookiemere · 04/07/2018 22:41

We have an Eufy it’s great although sometimes get stuck under the bed or tries to eat wires. Suction is good, although can’t store that much so need to empty after each use.

elQuintoConyo · 04/07/2018 22:44

Get a cat (if you don't already have one). Teach cat to sit on it. Enjoy hours of laughing at your roombacat.

You need to draw a face on your roomba and give it a name.

DorothyBastard · 04/07/2018 22:47

We have a Roomba called Roger who is a complete lifesaver. We have all wooden/tiled floors downstairs, 2 (soon to be 3) crumb scattering kids and a cat. We turn him on probably once a day and he scuttles about in a seemingly random fashion. The cleaner gives the floor a proper clean once a week but Roger just helps tide it over.

He’s not terribly quiet so we tend to pop him on just as we’re heading out.

We don’t use him upstairs as we have extremely thick pile carpets (and I’m frightened he’ll off himself by throwing himself down the stairs).

I wouldn’t be without him.

Cynderella · 04/07/2018 22:48

It's very effective. The floors look clean after she's been round. Emptying is easy. You still need to vacuum 'properly' so that you can move furniture , but that needs to be done much less often.

NotClear · 04/07/2018 23:08

I love my roomba! I vacuum daily now, just hit "clean" on my way out the door and when I come home it's docking and recharged itself ready for next time.

It's as good a suction as my Dyson animal .the only thing is you need to pick up tiny toys so they don't get sucked up. But it's worth it!

I got mine from amazon years ago for less than £200, and I see they're selling some for around £230. You might get that cheaper on appliancedirect? Worth checking it out.

I wouldn't bother with high spec roombas as I don't need their function. But I am quite a basic person so it may not suit you!

ThreeFish · 04/07/2018 23:26

I’ve had a roomba for years. More than 12, so he’s an old model now.
But he cleans everywhere he can get to.
I’ve got open plan all downstairs and he cleans under the sofas and can get up on the rugs. Suction is as good as the dyson.
He currently needs a new battery and I miss him not doing the hoovering when I’m at work.
In all the time I’ve had him, I’ve replaced the filters once and the battery.
It’s a great tool.
Although he gets stuck on wires or shoelaces or curved barstool bottoms but forward planning means the vacuuming gets done.

AtLastAPlan · 04/07/2018 23:26

I've got a Roomba 770, its about 6 years old, a Neato and a Eufy 😀 I'm addicted. Rory the Roomba is just sorting out my hallway now, that was expensive, the Neato was £200 something and is great, very methodical but doesn't get right up to the edge, and the Eufy was £160 ish and is great too but doesn't dock as it's supposed to, but at that price I don't mind. The suction on all of them is incredible, they certainly pull more crap out of the carpets than my Dyson or my Miele.

SwimmingKaren · 04/07/2018 23:30

I’m inspired by this thread. Might get a cheap one and see how we get on. Sounds like such a good ide, I hate hovering.

newmumwithquestions · 04/07/2018 23:31

@atlastaplan
You have 5 vacuum cleaners?

sleepytiger · 04/07/2018 23:40

I love mine, best thing I've bought in the past year

AtLastAPlan · 05/07/2018 00:15

@newmum no I've got 7! Blush Plus a mini one for the stairs that I don't use because the noise scares me 😀.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 05/07/2018 00:40

We have a Neato and I love it. Big open plan space mind you, I don't know if it would be as effective in a different layout. You do need to do a sweep for cables, Nerf bullets and the like before setting it off - it's not quite a case of pressing go. But totally worth it.

gazmitch · 01/12/2018 20:58

Interesting post, the Roomba is one of the best-known brands I am looking for a robot vacuum for my hardwood floors are any of these any good if so which one would you suggest. www.vacuumkoo.com/best-roomba-hardwood-floors/ Thanks for your help with this one.

Toomanybaubles · 02/12/2018 19:42

I have just ordered this which is £40 cheaper on that site than at amazon.

I’ve got a eufy, you may as well hang on for Black Friday as all the prices are bumped up right now in anticipation of…

I have pets and I’ve read far too many stories of these robots spreading poo in the night. 🤮 so he starts work at 9am when I’ve had a chance to check for any accidents! I’ve had friends caught out setting them to work overnight…

LondonQQ · 05/11/2021 08:16

We also have a Eufy as the Roombas were too expensive. Also got it on Black Friday 2 years ago.

We live in a flat and a robot vacuum is perfect! I don’t have it on a timer, there’s too much Lego in my life for that, but I put it on when I’ve tidied the floor once a day.

All DS’ friends are fascinated by it too.

I think I’d cry if it broke Grin

DH hates the sound of it though! But tough. He never vacuums!

My EUFY has broken. I’m heart broken.

My EUFY has broken. I’m heart broken.

I would be too!

I dread the day as mine has started making odd noises. I’m not sure they’re built to last...
