Black tarry stuff on bottom of iron

Every iron I have ever had gets this black tarry stuff on the plate of the iron after a while. It comes off on clothes and drives me crazy. i have no idea what it is or what to do about it. Any suggestions?

You’re melting your clothes onto it. I think you can get cleaner for it.

It comes off with a paracetamol or a piece of chalk but the iron has to be hot so watch your fingers. You literally just rub it over the black stuff. But yes you need to turn the iron down for some things.

You can also get it off using a bar of soap. Switch the iron off and while it is very hot rub a bar of soap on it. Wipe the soap off with a damp cloth and repeat until clean. Remember to switch the iron off each time.
You are probably using too hot an iron on synthetic bits on the clothes.
Ironing with a piece of muslin between the iron and the clothing might help.

You can get iron cleaning stuff. It's not a pleasant job.

I bought some specific cloths for this, a bit like a soft scourer. Worked really well. Have a look on Amazon.

I bought some stuff from Lakeland and used it on my iron. Fab stuff!

It had been on my iron since it was given as a wedding gift 13 yrs ago
