Pesky flies - can't identify them!!

Help!! We had a lovely extension added to our kitchen last summer. Our new french doors open into our garden but now, at about 6pm, we get an influx of tiny flies that seem to make a beeline for the sink, water in vases, the fridge door when it's opened and, even more disgustingly, my wine glass when it's full!!! They drown pretty quickly but there are loads of them. They look a bit like mosquitoes but they aren't. Quite translucent, with dark spots on the wings. Does anyone have any clue what these are and how to get rid of them? I can't keep the doors closed for the whole summer!! We do have two drains outside the back door so I'm wondering if they might be coming from there but haven't tracked them down yet. I've found them all over our lounge carpet this morning - it seems they live for about 24 hours. Anybody got any ideas??? Thank you! xxx

They sound a bit like fruit flies. Dopey little things, not buzzy? The drain is probably the culprit. I get them in the kitchen if I haven put the compost bin out when it's warm.
