Cloudy headlights

Ok, cheating a bit as this is car keeping rather than housekeeping.

The headlights on my old car have gone dull and cloudy. Please can anyone suggest a way to clean them up, preferably cheaply?

Toothpaste! Our garage suggested it to clean them up as they were going to fail the mot as too cloudy. DH cleaned them with it and they came up a treat!
