Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?

StealthNinjaMum · 09/05/2018 08:45

For 2000 posts a group of messy mumsnetters have been chucking out, selling, recycling and cooking weird cakes.

Are we free of clutter yet? Sadly not.

Thankfully we're here to get support and be told off when we have a relapse and bring more clutter into the house, garages, sheds, gardens.

Newbies are welcome to join us, it's easy we literally just get rid of one thing a day and report back.

I've got rid of a pair of sandals today. These have been lurking, unworn, for years so it was good to make a decision on them finally.

I'm now pretending to look at some boxes.

DesertIslandPenguin · 08/06/2018 20:09

I just wandered into the kitchen, decluttered a messy bit of worktop, and wandered back out. Who am I?!

Loads of dead batteries collected in a little bag to go out with recycling. And I have finally chucked the random frying pan lid that doesn't fit the current pans and hasn't been used in over a year. Why do we keep these things? Also tidied some packaging into recycling, why DH only put away half of the wrappers I don't know Hmm

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/06/2018 20:15

Sorted out the pantry today . Stacked all the coffee together, Dolmio sauce, dried pasta .
Checked flour,sugar
Checked dates on things.

Sorted out some kitchen things to go to the charity shop, ran it through the dishwasher .

Need to buy new underwear so I'll buy some then cull the shabby stuff . (If I cull it first I'll forget to buy the new stuff Blush )

SandAndSea · 08/06/2018 21:59

@DesertIslandPenguin - Hey! Do you remember when you used to have one of those random, frying pan lids??!! Grin

I'm really excited by clutter clearing at the moment. I used to keep EVERYthing!! Not any more.

DesertIslandPenguin · 08/06/2018 22:12

@SandAndSea clutter busting is very satisfying. It is nice to see clear spots appearing in the house again. I am hoping that all these little pockets of order will eventually join up and I'll suddenly have an Oasis Of Calm.

SandAndSea · 08/06/2018 23:04

@DesertIslandPenguin - Yeah!! My living room is lovely now. I just love sitting in it! The other rooms are definitely coming along, apart from DP's office which is a tip.

Gibble1 · 08/06/2018 23:08

Gah! I just lost a huge post!
Hit the ground running tonight after work.
Dining room table is now actually clear and clean. Gift bag full of paper has gone to recycling. All washing has been put away. Have just put on 3rd load of washing for the night. Have hoovered and vaxed the dining room and cleaned it. Also found a matchbox quiz game that DS got for Christmas and a hideous bracelet DD got for Christmas which will now go to the tombola on 23rd June.
DH and I have filled a rubbish bag full of clothes to sell at the boot sale (unless I get sick of it and put the stuff to the charity shop).
I am going to try to make a pact to fold washing straight from dryer and put it upstairs so the dining table is visible. We have a dining room and our house is so disgusting that we eat on our knees in front of the telly. It makes me sad.
Anyway, wedding anniversary tomorrow so we may be out for tea- unlikely as DH’s wages have a 6 day clearing on them for some unknown reason and we are mightily skint until they clear. Although we have gone into the overdraft- I find it very hard to tell with nationwide if we are £29.06 overdrawn or £29.06 over our overdraft limit. Very weird.

Gibble1 · 08/06/2018 23:41

Just rembered after my mind was jogged by a different thread, I found a packet of antihistamines in the bottom of my wardrobe which expired 2 years ago. So they were binned.

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/06/2018 03:35

I can see one old shoe in one of my rooms. I'm going to find the other and bin them. Hang on, please......Hmmmm. Couldn't find the other but one shoe is in the bin. Feet up and relax now? Grin
I'll go to the old playroom for a bit and try to fill a bag.

bobgoblin · 09/06/2018 11:10

I’ve finally started properly tackling the office. It’s only a tiny room but it was looking like something off one of those hoarding programmes. Blush Over the last couple of days I’ve filled another black bag full of rubbish and found huge amounts of paper for the recycling from in there. Things that need filing have been put in the right drawer of the filing cabinet and I’ll properly sort them out later. I’ve got a small shredding pile to tackle when I can actually get to the shredder.

I did only deal with things that I could make quick decisions about so when it’s a bit clearer I’ll go through it all again and be really ruthless. I’ve already got a mental list of things that I’ve now decided can go so I’m feeling a bit better about it.

DS has agreed that we can go through one of his toy drawers today and see if there’s anything he doesn’t want any more. I doubt he’ll part with much but it’s a start.

Unfortunately the rest of the house once again looks like a bomb’s hit it. It’s hard to believe that this time last week it was relatively tidy. Time to get off MN and try and restore some order!

Gibble1 · 09/06/2018 11:13

Today’s items so far: a ripped pillow from the dog’s bed. The box from the washing powder.
There had better be more later!

Gibble1 · 09/06/2018 12:56

VR headset thing which I was going to stick in the tombola has now sold for £10 and been collected. Woo woop!

Betsy86 · 09/06/2018 16:25

Well done gibble! I need to tackle some clothing today did get rid of another toy yesterda. Slow progress so far today hayfever is destroying me. Had a couple of kitchen door hinges mended earlier so was a good job i took loads of mess out those cupboards earlier in week....x

BrutusMcDogface · 09/06/2018 17:31

I've tried to sort out the paperwork that's piled up in my kitchen but I'm drowning. Help!!

GreyCloudsToday · 09/06/2018 19:24

Trip to the tip today so we've gotten rid of that big pile. Just a smallish selling and Freecycle pile left, yay! I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. To be honest there's not much of the house I haven't been through now and decluttered or reorganised in one way or another. Just the DIY tasks to start on now, but at least it's easier with the crap gone.

Brutus the kitchen is terrible for accumulating piles, good luck!

Hope your hay fever feels better soon Betsy

Lots of progress Gibble

Betsy86 · 09/06/2018 19:33

Thankyou greyclouds, its really bad today am currently led down wishing it would just ease off tried so many things. Managed to declutter a little kalax unit but apart from that nothing else achieved in this state grrr.
Same as you though i have tackled alot of the house just a few areas like wardrobe rest of doom cupboard under my bed and paperwork need doing. The garden t but it makes me feel so unwell out there not sure when il get round to it.
Does feel good having less bits around though must keep going Grin

Sparrowlegs248 · 09/06/2018 19:44

I'm going to rejoin this thread. I was on it a while ago but fell by the wayside as life events took over. Husband is a semi hoarder but left in November so I am slowly but surely trying to clear the house. Tbf to him he has done a bit too, and got his own place this week so fx for more!!

I have joined a local "free to a good home" page on fb and rehome an unloved cat scratching post today.

It's slow work with two toddlers and work but I'll get there!

StealthNinjaMum · 09/06/2018 19:55

Brutus keep at it, paperwork is slow work but it is so good when you get on top of it.

Welcome back lotta I remember how your dh's stuff took over the house.

Like a stealth ninja I have just been in dd2s room. Changes have to be gradual so I chucked out her collection of toilet rolls she does arts and crafts with, some balloons, some bits of torn up paper - dd2 makes lots of bedding for her toys - some jumpers she won't fit into in the winter, a helmet and a Hello kitty toy for the charity shop and an octonaughts toy to sell. She hasn't noticed. Her treasured items are in a bag in a bag so she won't see them.

I am also throwing away a drawstring bag with a broken drawstring.

Decluttered a chipped plate straight into the bin. I painted it 4 years ago and it was very lovely. I could put up with one chip but noticed it was now up to 4, so binned it. I have also found a homeless charity to donate a box of mugs to--they're thrilled unlike the local charity shop who are very surly about all donations now.

Sparrowlegs248 · 09/06/2018 20:11

Thank you stealth! I have a plan for tomorrow which includes getting a couple of plastic storage boxes and putting some stuff in the loft. Stbx has left a load of things he collected from his grandads house ((after he died) which I'm sure he won't take away in hurry but which I do t want cluttering the place up. Nor do I want to chuck them. I'm going to take some boxed of books downstairs to make way for a new unit in the boys room.

BrutusMcDogface · 09/06/2018 21:25

Thank you ladies! I think I need to write a list of jobs that need to be done in each room as I'm currently flitting around starting things and not finishing anything.

Good support on this thread 😊👍

BrutusMcDogface · 09/06/2018 21:27

Desert- good idea re: homeless charity. I have lots of stuff that I don't want to bin but don't know where to take.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/06/2018 21:30

I need to wash the nets (yes I have nets For Shame ) and wash the windows.

I'll need to brave it into my DS room , (I might well be missing a long while Grin )

Threw out two backpacks (they were beyond recycling) and let him have his new bag , even though he's only got a week left of school.

Sparrowlegs248 · 09/06/2018 22:11

70isalimit I have a couple of nets. I washed the bathroom one a few weeks ago. Put it back up. Baby grabbed and pulled it and it disintegrated!! I have a new net....
