Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge: Part 3: Are we nearly there yet?

StealthNinjaMum · 09/05/2018 08:45

For 2000 posts a group of messy mumsnetters have been chucking out, selling, recycling and cooking weird cakes.

Are we free of clutter yet? Sadly not.

Thankfully we're here to get support and be told off when we have a relapse and bring more clutter into the house, garages, sheds, gardens.

Newbies are welcome to join us, it's easy we literally just get rid of one thing a day and report back.

I'm not being that productive, you are not alone. Grin
I listed something on Ebay & am planning a bundle listing on Ebay... but I want to get the items as clean as possible, and then need good pics... next weekend project probably.

Anyone want to guess how many pairs of socks I have?
Wish me luck, girls, I'm goin' in for the count.

IHateYourCarpet · 03/06/2018 20:07

Honestly Chloe? Fuck'em. I don't understand parents that just can't be happy about a new grandchild.

Channel your rage into decluttering Grin !

We’ve spent another day in the garden and I have decluttered one side of the flower beds. It was absolutely full of stones because mil comes over and let’s the dogs in the garden. They then dig up the flower beds cause she doesn’t watch them so she has filled them with stone. Taken me all flipping day to sort it- along with my lawn being covered with plant pots that she had put in the beds upside down 😬.
Makes it look like the clampets live here!

IHateYourCarpet · 03/06/2018 20:30

Gibble 😂 I'm sorry. But your MIL brings stones to your garden to cover up her dogs destruction? Does she bring them in her pockets? I just have this image of a shady looking lady in a trench coat discreetly emptying pebbles from the beech onto your flowerbeds then running away!

Vinorosso74 · 03/06/2018 20:51

Bit late to this thread but can I join in?
Our bedroom is seriously cluttered an impossible to keep clean so I made a start today. Carrier bag o of clothes went to textile recycling bin. I have thrown some general bits of crap out and now have some bags ready with things to go to relevant places ie. SIL, charity shop and some small toys for a toy charity. Think I have a few things which can go on Freecycle but need to work out what.
I feel better for having made a start.

lljkk · 03/06/2018 21:17

I weeded the driveway for half an hour today, does that count? :)

Socks, I have
1 theme pr, I impulse-purchased 6m ago
3 thick pairs I bought for me (hiking quality)
13 prs that were gifts to me
46 prs that are castoffs from others in household
Total = 62 prs

I suspect I will never in my life need to buy another pair of socks. Blush

PenelopeFlintstone · 03/06/2018 22:33

lljkk - that's a LOT of socks!!! Grin

Gibble1 · 03/06/2018 22:40

Lljkk, I folded up 52 pairs of socks one Sunday. I now throw them away as I go if they are in any way not tip top condition!
Carpet, the dogs and stones are mine. We built a fence across the patio so they can go outside in the day (they have a flap) and can’t dig. She has come over to mow the lawn (very kindly) but let’s them out and they dig. So she has put stuff in all the flower beds 🤬.
I’m chucking it all though so she won’t be able to do it any more!

NaMajesty · 03/06/2018 22:57

Chloe the reaction wild have been a lot worse if your PIL found out about a new grandchild through a mutual friend on Facebook. Speaking from experienceGrin

StealthNinjaMum · 03/06/2018 23:31

Aghhhh! I just wrote a really long post and lost it.

I'm too tired to retype it. In a nutshell it was gibble what was in your bin? Are you ok and some comments about socks.

Also I have helped dds get rid of some cuddly toys for their school summer fair and I have got rid of some clothes in my wardrobe.

Welcome vinorosso

Today I'm going to force myself to stay in 3 rooms for half an hour each: daughter's room, office and playroom. I'll see how many items I can cull.

PenelopeFlintstone · 04/06/2018 06:07

Three carrier bags of rubbish (chip packets, drink bottles, clothing labels, etc) out of daughter's room. She's such a grot.
Now to the playroom. Not really a playroom anymore; more a junk room for DD's old toys that she's sentimentally attached to.

PenelopeFlintstone · 04/06/2018 07:04

Two more from the playroom. You wouldn't know it though.

BrutusMcDogface · 04/06/2018 07:09

Penelope- you're up and at it early!

Hi everyone! I tentatively joined the old thread and have been doing the challenge (on and off Blush) but am rubbish at keeping up with threads so have mainly been lurking! Hope that's ok. Today I have a few hours to get lots done- I'll try and report back!

PenelopeFlintstone · 04/06/2018 09:10

Brutus, I'm not really that good - I'm in Australia Grin
Good luck with your plans for today Smile

BrutusMcDogface · 04/06/2018 10:44

Haha! How funny. You could have owned that! Grin

Thanks- so far I've made myself scrambled eggs!! One cup of tea and then it's all go Smile

PurpleFrog · 04/06/2018 12:44

I haven't done much since I last checked in. I was injured in the line of duty - I managed to hurt my back while sorting things into piles on the dining room floor! Blush Luckily it eased a lot over the following few days, but I have been very careful over the past week not to do anything stupid to set it back.

I got rid of the black binbag from the landing with the bin collection on Thursday. It was around a third full. Then, on Saturday, I dropped off a plastic kitchen bin with lid, wire shoe rack and box of kitchen stuff at a local charity which takes furniture and homewares. I also had a visit to the recycling site with a bag of broken electrical stuff, some flattened boxes and an old folding exercise step which had survived a previous attempt to get rid. I had been holding on to a broken electric kettle as I had purchased an extended warranty on it - but hadn't been able to find the paperwork. It had broken where the lid fits on. Anyway, I managed to convince myself that they would probably put the damage down to wear and tear, so I took that as well. We already replaced it over a year ago.... sigh! I have reclaimed the space on the worktop and can just forget about it now.

I am partway through filling up a box for another charity. I have cleaned some of Mum's jewellery and some silver-plated teaspoons and sugar tongs. And put in a large hideous Edinburgh Crystal bowl. If I can get a couple more evenings to work on it, I should be able to get the box handed in this week. I have mentally earmarked a number of things to put in - I just have to fetch/check/clean them.

NaMajesty · 04/06/2018 12:59

I don't know if I mentioned I eBayed a load of old baby clothes. It was on my to do list for decluttering anyway and I've had a few bids already. So there's 12 bags ready and waiting to go.

So glad I did the shed yesterday. I am now using it for extra storage for massive boxes of washing powder, 4 litre bottles of fabric softener, 5 litre water bottles, cases of pop etc. All big things that took up space in the kitchen.

Going to eBay a load more old clothes and take one thing to the post office to be sent off. Should have been sent off last Thursday

StealthNinjaMum · 04/06/2018 13:01

Ooh purplefrog relax a bit, I once injured my back bending over to pick up an empty box. It was the most ridiculous, embarrassing incident at work.

I don't have much time for dedicated decluttering today as there's lots of general housework to do however I have just moved 8 winter coats and cardigans from the cupboard hellhole under the stairs so there's more space in the cupboard hellhole. I decided that I really hated one of my coats and one is too small for dd2 so they're going to be washed and donated. The others are being washed and put in people's wardrobes until winter.

I also decluttered the pockets. In dds' school coats I found twigs, feathers, 3 empty biscuit packets, an empty pom bears packet, a really nice shiny coin that must be special (I have no idea where dd2 got this), a tooth(!), a spelling test from 2017, a letter from school that clearly I never got, a number of stones, hairbands, a cat toy, a kinder egg with a toy, lots of tissues, hairclips, hairbands, non matching gloves and a scarf! I felt like a magician pulling more and more stuff out of the pockets - I half expected a six foot strand of coloured scarves and a rabbit to pop out at the end.

Stealth Grin at your DD's pockets. While washing my eldest DS jeans once I found a live beetle. He was planning on taking it into school for show and tell. I blame the school for teaching them about 'minsex' that week

GreyCloudsToday · 04/06/2018 15:05

Hi Vinorosso74 nice username!

OMG lljkk 62 pairs!! That's hilarious. Are they all in good nick or holey dusters-to-be?

Congrats chloechloe Flowers

About to take 3 carrier bags to the charity shop and a parcel to the post office.

Good work on the shed Nama I'm well impressed.

DesertIslandPenguin · 04/06/2018 17:23

I have helped DS declutter about 30 magazines/comics. And I spent a fun half hour shredding old paperwork. It is so satisfying to see bits of clear space emerging in the house!!

SandAndSea · 04/06/2018 17:42

@chloechloe - Congratulations! Flowers

Today's items are a make-up bag and an old, dried tube of grout.

I've ticked off a diy job which has been on my list for ages.

I've also juiced a load of veg which was about to go off, inc a big bag of kale. Grin

IHateYourCarpet · 04/06/2018 20:13

Potentially decluttering my coil tomorrow. Third migraine in two weeks Sad that or I'll be cluttering up the medicine drawer instead.

Gibble1 · 04/06/2018 20:52

Today I have cleared the hallway enough to hoover it for the first time in way too many months. I’ve thrown away 2 bags for life of rubbish and condensed more stuff to go to cubs when I get a chance to get there.
I’ve cleared an inch thick pile of paperwork from the mantelpiece so should be able to put the new batteries in the clock tomorrow too.
I’m so ashamed of the state of my house. It’s not a home at all it’s just full of shit.
I think mil has been here today cause a green garden bag is empty on the patio and there was some stuff in the wrong places in the kitchen so I’ve put them back where they live and have hoovered downstairs.
Bill has just got a puppy so DH has taken all of our puppy books over to his this evening (I think he wants to squeeze the baby gooeyness!).
I must just keep telling myself that it didn’t get to this state in one day so it won’t undo itself in one day either.
