Staining on marble bathroom surface

I left a mirror on the marble surface in the bathroom, it caused a rust stain. So I googled it and saw that the remedy was to use lemon juice and then bicarb of soda. I did that, but it made it 10 times worse.

Now instead of a couple of small rust marks, I have a long pale cloudy stain that I can not get rid of. I tried soaking face cloths on it to try to wash it out. I also used a marble polish. Nothing has worked and the rust marks are still there too.

Will I have to get someone to sand it down and re polish the marble?

Acid etches marble (wears away the surface) so that's why you have a problem. The V&A recommends using white spirit (which will remove wax too) or deionised water and mild detergent. Tbh if you can get it re-polished that's probably the only way to properly sort it out.
