What's in your kitchen?

JobHunting4 · 25/04/2018 20:07

We have just ordered our new kitchen due for delivery in 4wks. I've long had plans to declutter some of the things DH bought to go on the worktops (knife block, chopping boards - multiple, bread bin) and this is my opportunity.
It's a small kitchen and I'm hoping to have basics of kettle, toaster, tea/coffee/sugar one chopping board out. But now I'm wondering about my utensils and other random things.

Can you tell me what you have in your kitchen that lives on the worktop. The Internet is full of show kitchens and I can't rely on it

Same, plus microwave and bread bin

Northumberlandlass · 25/04/2018 20:11

Egg holder thingy, kitchen roll holder, salt pig, kettle, toaster, bread bin, small wine rack, cloth potato bag & chopping boards!

When it’s tidy -just the kettle, microwave, fruit bowl and kitchen roll. (Dish soap and hand soap on sink)

RoseMartha · 25/04/2018 22:19

Currently have on counter tops kettle, toaster, kitchen roll, microwave and tea bag rest thing.

NoraBarlow111 · 26/04/2018 10:08

Nespresso coffee machine & capsules,

Ecover hand soap.
1 Ltr electric kettle,
1 Ltr jug of water (cant drink cold water)
kitchen roll

moreismore · 26/04/2018 10:12

Nespresso
Kettle
Chopping boards
Salt pig
Utensil jar

Tea etc live in the mug cupboard if that’s an option space-wise.
Also bread in a Lakeland bread saver bag.

We swapped knife block for a magnetic knife rack on the wall which is a great space saver and has the advantage of keeping sharp stuff well out of reach of DS

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 26/04/2018 10:13

Kettle, toaster and microwave. Everything else others have mentioned I either don't have, or have put it in the cupboards.

Incidentally, I thought knife blocks were good for breeding germs?

NoisyBirds · 26/04/2018 10:13

I had never heard of a salt pig until recently. The most useful thing ever!

Kim82 · 26/04/2018 10:15

We have kettle, toaster, microwave, bread bin and a chopping board out in our kitchen usually. We do currently have a catering size bottle of squash that was give to us on the side at the moment though as it’s too big to fit in the cupboard.

ginauk84 · 26/04/2018 10:23

I only have a Tassimo, built in microwave, use the grill for toast and a boiling water tap instead of a kettle was a great investment for the new kitchen. I hate clutter therefore aim to have nothing on the worksurfaces :)

Tiddlywinks63 · 26/04/2018 10:27

Microwave, cafetière and proper coffees jar on one, toaster, kettle, tea/coffee/sugar jars, chopping board and butter dish on another. Oil, salt pig and pepper pot plus utensils jar on third (sounds like my kitchen is bigger than yours I think, though it's not that large 😄)

Hoolahoophop · 26/04/2018 10:36

Tons, toaster, bread bin, herbs, drainer, knife block, kitchen roll, wire rack, assorted drugs and multivitamins, scales, tea bag dish thing, electric pressure cooker, fruit bowl, Heywood chef, coffee maker, children's Easter eggs. I really, really need to declutter.

Bluntness100 · 26/04/2018 10:38

Kettle, toaster, Alexa, speaker, tea/coffee/sugar, bread board, knife block, napkins and kitchen roll, it's a big kitchen though so work surfaces look fairly empty, I also dislike clutter.

FizzingWhizzbee · 26/04/2018 10:43

About a billion things. Here goes:

chopping boards
kitchen roll
cleaning wipes
kettle
tea (several different types), coffee and sugar canisters
cookbook holder
salt pig (with the nice maldon salt)
salt 'bottle' (with the cheap cooking salt)
oil bottle (nice refillable one)
pepper mill
garlic bowl
utensil pot
knife block x 2
large jars holding different rices and pastas x 5
stand mixer
food processor
coffee machine
microwave
various bags of bread
probably some other crap as well that I have forgotten.

It drives me berserk, but there is literally nowhere else for most of this stuff to live because the kitchen is so badly designed. We're getting it redone later this year, and I can't WAIT to rehome all this stuff and have lovely tidy minimalist worksurfaces.

randomsabreuse · 26/04/2018 10:43

I want to have:

Microwave, Toaster, Kettle, 2 granite boards either side of hob, rotary spice rack, 2 metal jars of hob implements (wooden spoons/spatulas). Jug of filtered water

I can tolerate (ok sized kitchen) breadmaker, food processor, smoothie maker, spiralizer as these sit in corners. Extra junk makes me cross - but DH tends to dump things and add extra "useful" appliances!

Ragwort · 26/04/2018 10:49

Too much - kettle, toaster, breadbin, microwave, sandwich toaster machine (usually in cupboard but left out at the moment), Nespresso, Kitchen Aid mixer (actually it doesn't work but I can't bring myself to throw it out and it looks nice Grin), tea, coffee, sugar jars, various jars of olive oil and open bottle of red wine, basket of miscellaneous paperwork, chopping board, butter dish, packet of biscuits, various tupperwares waiting to be found a home, smoothie maker ................ far too much crap. As I have a day off today I will make a big effort to clear it all up (after I have posted on the 'lazy' thread Grin).

Waspnest · 26/04/2018 14:29

We're currently redoing our kitchen and up until now due to crap storage I've had about 1m length of usable work surface (it's made me a bit obsessive about work surface tbh). With the new kitchen I've having a shed load of tall cabinets with drawers inside fitted into a long alcove so that most things can go in them leaving the rest of the kitchen base drawer units (or ovens/dishwasher etc) and worktop only. The plan is to have a magnetic wall rack for knives and a wall hanging rail for certain utensils.

Hopefully on the worktop there will just be a kettle and my two stands of stackable mugs. Coffee/tea etc will go in a deep drawer underneath. I'll probably put the microwave in the utility because I only use it for defrosting or warming milk. DH says he'll believe all this when he sees it.....

JobHunting4 · 27/04/2018 06:53

Thanks everyone... Not sure about that comment about being hidden. My app is giving me major issues this week.

You've all reassured me that we have no control, and things just end up out when we want a minimal kitchen. Microwave is going in a cupboard. I've been wondering about those magnetic knife things, good to hear they're good.

Off to Google the salt pig... What the hell?

This thread has been really timely as we have builders in today and I have had to completely clear the kitchen counters, I will plan very carefully when I put things back ....... it looks so lovely with nothing on display !

Redglitter · 27/04/2018 08:34

Toaster
Kettle
Tea/sugar/coffee jars
Chopping board
Kitchen roll holder
Tassimo
Microwave
Bread tin

Everything else lives in cupboards

00100001 · 27/04/2018 08:37

Kettle
Coffee machine
Vase with flowers
Fruit bowl
Hand soap by sink
Lego models all lined up behind the hob.
Egg basket

picklemepopcorn · 27/04/2018 08:44

The chopping board set stands vertically at the back. Microwave. Kettle/coffee pot. Toaster on a tray to catch crumbs and for slicing on. Heat protectors by the oven. Alexa. The fruit bowl and a candle is on top of the microwave.

On the kitchen table we have a couple of heat protectors and a tub of cutlery.

I'd love to keep the toaster in a cupboard, but we use it too much.

picklemepopcorn · 27/04/2018 08:44

The hidden comment is a link to a survey. She's been all over the shop posting it.

averythinline · 27/04/2018 08:45

kettle (mugs n tea n coffee all in cupboard)
soap/washing up
food compost bin (strugglin with where to put this)
