Glasses

Just how do you stop glasses getting etched in the dishwasher? We have a water softener and are assiduous in using rinse aid and salt.

Yes, I know we could wash them by hand. Not going to happen.

Wash them by hand.

I'm interested to know the answer - I recycled some recently as they ended up looking such a mess. I'm keen to stop the new ones going the same way.

You can't, they will all eventually etch in the dishwasher. For that reason, and because I'm not going to hand wash them, I buy inexpensive glasses from ikea and replace them once I can't bear them any longer.

I do the same as bitter.

Nice glasses are handwashed but day to day we use Ikea ones.

You can't stop or reverse it. But some glass doesn't seem to etch, I have ancient freebe coke glasses (shaped like a can of coke), Duralex glasses and some very fine ones from John Lewis, all look sparkling amongst my ruined glassware. Now if only JL still sold the good sort and I could stop trying to find that rare thing; a thin fine glass that doesn't etch.
