Blower say they are coming to fit one, any negatives to this?

make sure it's a type 2 meter, otherwise you won't be able to use it if you swap suppliers.

squiggletea · 18/04/2018 06:36

Do I assume a type 2 metre wouldn’t be free ?

Ifailed · 18/04/2018 06:41

none of them are 'free', in that the cost of installation is added to everyone's bill. But the newer type 'SMETs2', should be compatible with other suppliers, unlike the earlier ones.

You don't have to have a meter installed, you won't get cheaper gas/electricity if you do and it should be pretty obvious that you pay more when you got lots of things using it. I've yet to see a convincing arguement to get one myself.

Just puts meter readers out of a job

Ifailed · 18/04/2018 06:50

I haven't had a meter reader visit for years, just send in my own readings when prompted by the supplier. It takes about a minute.

My mate works for the government in cyber security. He says they are extremely easy to hack, and he won't have one for that reason.

MrsTylerJoseph · 18/04/2018 06:56

Vulnerable to hacking.

somewhereovertherain · 18/04/2018 06:57

Once the 2nd gen ones are out. To be honest they’ll be no easier or harder to hack then your home Wi-fi if you haven’t changed the default passwords.

MessySurfaces · 18/04/2018 11:57

Hmm, but potentially losing all power seems more catastrophic than fraud because of the WiFi?
