Sweat smell in DH gym/football clothes

Are there any tips on how to wash the sweat smells out of DHs gym and football clothes? The smells never used to linger but now I can't seem to wash them out! I've tried cool washes, hot washes, white vinegar in the wash, bicarb etc I'm at a loss! Am I missing some magic way of washing out these horrible smells?

Following! My DH leaves his football boots in the back of my car and it reeks! Any remedies for the shoes too wouldn’t go amiss 🤢

Soak the item in vinegar then wash it.

Halo sports wash (Sainsbury's)

Assuming you're already using plenty of biological powder (not liquid/tabs) to wash with, give Ace bleach a go.

SoulToSqueeze · 07/04/2018 22:13

latte how long would you say to soak them in the vinegar for? I'm definitely going to be buying that sports wash. It didn't even occur to me that there may be a specific powder/wash for sports clothes!

I have used white vinegar neat on damp clothes out of the washing machine. Liberally doused all over the armpits and the clothes then hung on the line to dry. Seems to have worked for me.

Oh -and no smell remained once dry

Dissolve aspirin I’m a bucket of water and soak them before washing . It works, weirdly.

I buy the laundry sanitizer liquid and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the offending bits before washing- works a treat.

Thanks all for the replies. Lots of ideas to try! If nothing works on these clothes they'll just have to go in the bin! Lol

Zoflora in the fabric softener bit of the drawer or the laundry cleanser stuff you get. Morrison's is cheaper than dettol

Youradviceneeded · 09/04/2018 19:07

I buy halo sports wash too. It is great stuff. My local Sainsbury's sells it but I haven't seen it anywhere else.

CMOTDibbler · 09/04/2018 19:13

Halo sports wash is brilliant We buy it from Wiggle as its cheaper, and not only does it de stink clothes, it also keeps lycra looking good too

himalayansalt · 09/04/2018 19:16

The sweat smell is bacteria. So get your dh to wet the armpits of the sweaty shirts with cold water (a plant spray bottle is good for this) and rub the area with dettol antibacterial bar soap before washing. Or spray on tea tree oil in a suitable solution. Do a long wash on 40 degrees with biological powder. A capful of Zoflora in the drum beforehand might also help.

Don't do this for him though will you? please.

Synecdoche · 09/04/2018 19:19

I do the same as dementedpixie

SoulToSqueeze · 09/04/2018 20:25

Himalayan oh no, I'm just sick of the smell lol he can do all the washing himself. I leave his smelly clothes seperate, just needed some tips :)

Thanks all for the suggestions, will definitely be buying some sports wash next shop but since we have the vinegar and zoflora in the house already they're worth a try :)
