Fridge Freezer fault: engineer wants to regas, not replace

Intergrated fridge-freezer has stopped cooling. Installed only last year and under warrenty. Reported it to the company that handles repairs for the manufacturer. They sent an engineer who turned out to be the installer. He said that it needed re-placing and booked a date for that. However, this wasn't accepted by the repair handling company who are insisting that another engineer calls to re-gas and maybe fit a new compresser.

Could take a while of course. I understand that re-gassing is usually only ever a temporary measure and that it's not advisable when, for example, there's a leak. Not only right now does the fridge smell, are we unable to store anthing in it for any length of time (it's turned off), have we had already to throw out contents of freezer, but we can detect a slight whiff of gas. The appliance retailer, who also got involved, agreed that the most sensible thing would be to replace but the repairs handling company are being belligerent.

Any thoughts or advice would be gratefully received.

I'd call your gas supplier or the fire brigade about the gas; get out of the house to wait for them.

When last year? If under (I think) 6 months they have to replace it.
