Clutterbugs - household organising style

I stumbled across a website by a Canadian women, which I think might finally help me with getting on top of the clutter and mess in my house. I've tried various things before but they haven't seemed sustainable, when I'm the only person who seems to want to do it in a household of six (admittedly, most of them are under ten).

She has this theory that there are different types of people and you need to arrange things according to your type or you won't keep it up. I've been trying her 30 day decluttering challenge and rearranging things according to her suggestions and it's actually really helping me. DH (for the first time) is also getting involved with it to. It doesn't feel as burdensome as things like Marie Kondo and yet seems to work.

Anyone interested in taking a look and discussing her ideas here? www.clutterbug.me - she has a youtube channel too.

Hi op! I've got her book. She's fab.

I stumbled across her on YouTube and have been addicted ever since.

Try the "21 item toss" it's great 😂

Have recommended her on here a few times, she seems to be doing well.

If you like this type of style then also check out another Canadian, her channel is called " clean my space " they are massive!

I find if I put either of the above two on when I'm cleaning, I get twice as much done.

( got her book from amazon uk ) it's very good.

yellowplumpreserves · 06/03/2018 22:40

Yes, I got both of her books on Kindle now and they are great. And I totally agree about getting more done if I have her on. I've been doing her 30 day declutter since Friday and feel so much more positive about it than previous time I have tried this sort of thing.

I think she's particularly helpful on understanding yourself. I come out as a ladybug on the test on her website, but as a cricket from the test in her book. Can see both types in myself, but am going for ladybug solutions as I think quick and easy will work better for our family. DH is a bee.

It's made me realise that part of the reason I have struggled to get on top of things is that I am a bit of a perfectionist and only start something if I am am going to do the whole job and spend a whole day on it. That is overwhelming so it's easy to put it off. Using the clutter bug technique has almost given me permission to do a small test and be encouraged and pleased with it. DH has also got involved because he finds it easier to start something if he thinks we can feel positive about small achievements.

So quite encouraging, really. And I've already got rid of a reasonable amount of stuff and have only been doing it for a few days.

Thank you for this! Since I saw your post I have watched loads of her videos I love her!! I'm a lady bug... I loved her simple question about whether you put the lid back on a jar properly or just a half twist and shove it in 😳 😁

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 08/03/2018 17:56

I love clutterbug. I watch her YouTube videos too x

TheBitterBoy · 08/03/2018 18:19

I love clutterbug too - her solutions are so straightforward and achievable

inappropriateraspberry · 08/03/2018 18:27

I've come across this before, but didn't realise there were books!! I'm a cricket - piles of stuff and paperwork, and always looking for the perfect storage system!!

yellowplumpreserves · 08/03/2018 18:31

I really have found her inspiring to just get on and do something simple that will work without feeling overwhelmed or doing nothing until I have time to make if perfect (which with four kids will be never!).

I'd love to share what we're doing on here for encouragement. Since discovering clutterbug last week I've done a fair bit of her decluttering challenge and it is encouraging. Horrified with how much junk I've been getting rid of!

Yellow plum I've just watched her garbage therapy video and I'm just about to do it!!

MissOrganisedMe · 09/03/2018 10:54

I'm gonna check this out. Feeling overwhelmed with the shit storm that is my house and life. Tidy house, tidy mind and all that...

ferriswheel · 09/03/2018 11:12

Thank you for this. Off to look now.

mickeymacca · 09/03/2018 11:33

I've just spent 15 minutes going round the house with a bin bag was great definitely recommend. I love her style and how she presents. I need to stop watching her videos and go and do more! 😁

Todamhottoday · 09/03/2018 12:59

Fan-bloody-tastic!!

I am a lady bug absolutely me down to a tee!

Thank you for sharing that just watched some videos and will watch more later

yellowplumpreserves · 09/03/2018 15:11

Yesterday I got rid of several bin bags worth of rubbish and managed to donate some more stuff. Today I am going to tackle under the bed! Immunity very far in but feeling very positive about how things look already. I really love her style too.

Thanks for this - just had a look at her website. Is it worth buying the books or are they just a rehash of what’s online?

Zoflorabore · 09/03/2018 17:05

The book is brilliant and also has checklists in it.
I have a kindle but prefer to have the book.

Last time I checked on amazon, the second book wasn't available in the uk to purchase.

Honestly she is quite addictive. I'm getting so much done.

Am flummoxed how she does the 15 minutes tidy up though and her house looks huge compared to mine.

I think the secret may be getting the house to the standard you're happy with and then doing it. Mine is desperate for a good old de clutter. OCD keeps it clean but would take me half the time to do it if the clutter was under control ( only upstairs and mainly clothes and toys )

Keep sharing everyone :)

Namelesswonder · 09/03/2018 17:14

Thanks Zoflora, I have tried so many of these books in the past and failed to make any real improvements. Basically because I’m lazy when it comes housework! But will try again.....

Zoflorabore · 09/03/2018 17:21

You can do it!

Not sure how much of her you've watched but Cas tends to do a little thing at the end of each video where she talks about herself etc and she said that she was the biggest slob ever!
From what I've gathered, the aim is to achieve as much as possible in the least amount of time possible. Sounds good to me.

I messaged her last year when I first found her, she replied and was so helpful.

What are your problem areas?

yellowplumpreserves · 09/03/2018 20:52

I do agree with her about certain things taking hardly any time, but I don't think it's possible to spend so little time on housework until it's up to a reasonable standard.

yellowplumpreserves · 10/03/2018 13:39

Yesterday and today I tried some of her home made cleaning products and think they work pretty well. I've made the multi-purpose cleaner and the class cleaner and they seem to do a nice job.

OP posts:
mickeymacca · 10/03/2018 14:04

Ooh I'll have to try those. I've watched her video about kids rooms and have gone labelling mad today great fun! Hoping it will encourage my children to put things back where they belong.

Oooh! Looks interesting! Will have a look 😊

I'm loathe to buy a book just yet, as I bought another 30 day cleaning guide and didn't even achieve day 1 Blush

BrutusMcDogface · 10/03/2018 15:15

I just did the quiz, and I'm a butterfly through and through! How did she know?! Grin

yellowplumpreserves · 10/03/2018 18:04

@BrutusMcDogface, you can probably get away without her book but look at her 30 day decluttering challenge on her YouTube page. First time I've ever got past Day 2 on something like this!

@mickeymacca, your labels look great. Big colourful labels are so much fun. I had a label fest on Wednesday and Thursday and it seems to be working so far.
