...Metal pan scourers in the dishwasher. I was scared it would disintegrate or taint my stainless steel pans but it didn't!

Off the back of a thread I started last year asking whether you could machine wash a mop head (you can!), feel free to add your most recent economical and ecological (in that less is thrown away!) housekeeping discoveries.

I have discovered you can chuck school back packs in the washer!!

Ooh, another one I've recently discovered is silicone food covers. In a bid to reduce our copious clingfilm usage, I picked up some lovely colourful covers from JL. They seal bowls but can also be layered onto a square or rectangle dish (albeit without the suction they have on round bowls).

silicone bakeware and lids you can wash in the washing mashine.
lunch bags as well (great after yoghurt explosion)

mayhew · 04/03/2018 10:47

All bathroom dishes and toothbrushes.

LittleWingSoul · 04/03/2018 12:57

@brownelephant Does washing silicone bakeware in the washing machine help get rid of that tackiness and greasy pong that older silicone starts to emit?

yes ime it does.

fussychica · 05/03/2018 12:54

I'm assuming those of you washing mop heads in the washing machine or anything manky in the dishwasher wash them on their own or do you think that they will be fine with normal stuff. Not judging just asking.

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 05/03/2018 12:57

Not quite the same but you can make a lovely flavoured vodka in the dishwasher!

LittleWingSoul · 06/03/2018 12:49

@fussychica I was the mop head along with my towels, dishcloths and kitchen sponges at 60 degrees.

I don't wash anything particularly manky in the dishwasher - I have heard of people doing their toilet brushes etc in the machine and assume that on its own on a hot cycle it'd be fine but I wouldn't want to try it personally!

I always use colour catcher sheets more than once.

TheInvisiblePieceofShit · 06/03/2018 13:07

I recall on one of these threads someone said they put their loo seat in the dishwasher!Shock

LittleWingSoul · 06/03/2018 18:24

@TheInvisible i was thinking of that thread too!

@AnneW I also do this... I reuse them until they turn black!

Yep! Haha

wowfudge · 07/03/2018 07:45

@brownelephant - for silicone stuff in the washing machine, what kind of programme do you use and what about detergent?

brownelephant · 07/03/2018 07:49

the 20min quick wash as hot as possible.
I use a drop of washing up liquid. (really only a drop or you will have a foam party!)
