Baby brain - melted butter on carpet

In one of the worst cases of baby brain and sleep deprivation, I thought it was a good idea to put a block of butter on the radiator for a few minutes to soften it. Of course I forgot and only remembered it was there (behind the sideboard) after about five hours. There was no more butter left in the paper. Everything had melted through the radiator and onto the carpet.

After an already tiring day, I had a meltdown myself, and left everything in place to figure out today.

I’ve tried everything on google: soap with warm water, corn starch, baking soda. Finished the roll of paper towels. There is still a lot of butter coming out, and an area of about A5 size of incredibly greasy carpet. Sad

Can you shove a load of talc over it and hoover repeatedly?

Use an old towel and soak up as much as you can before you try anything else - it can go in a really hot wash afterwards. There's no point doing anything else until you've got as much of the oil up as possible.

Thank you for the tips. I wasn’t getting anywhere with the towel and decided to use an old sainsburys card to scrape it off, and it worked perfectly. It’s still a bit oily, I will try to absorb it with cornstarch.

I second talcum powder (loads of it), leave overnight then Hoover up. Has always worked for me.
