sounds like limescale build up

Mercy · 01/05/2007 12:20

It's probably limescale.

My iron is a different make so I'm afraid I can't really tell you how clean it, sorry!

Unless there is a standard way.

My self cleaning iron does this too...it helps if you empty it after every use & before you start ironing with it press the steam button (the one that makes steam shoot out) a few times.

my iron (different brand) did this. Very annoying!!! I cleaned it out by filling the tank with white vinegar and water and letting that steam through.

Have you used any scented laundry water in it? Apparently that can cause it. I use a plant spray thing now to spray clothes rather than the steam from the iron because I like using the scented liquid.

Not that I've actually done much in the way of ironing in the last 5 months

Manictigger · 01/05/2007 12:30

Is it rust? Years ago when I used to actually use my iron as a steam iron, I left some water in it and when I used the steam bit next it sprayed out lovely rusty water. Nowadays I use a plant sprayer or iron when stuff is still damp.

I clean mine with vinegar too like Shonaspurtle and it seems to the the trick. Much cheaper than the descaler stuff from the shops and not another horrible chemical in the house. Just make sure you rinse it out thoroughly!!
