How to clean brass?

I have inherited a brass fish. It has some brasso reminants on it from my grandads cleaner. How can I safely clean off the dirt and remnants?

Also any info on what it is, very much appreciated!

I use a paste of cream of tartar and lemon juice. I don't know if it's suitable for antiques, but it really works.

Two soft cloths. One for brasso on, one to buff. As you buff, it will all get warmer and any old bits of brasso should come off (expect your buffing cloth to be black by the end) but you could use a soft old toothbrush to encourage any stubborn bits to come loose. You need to rub more than you think - it will turn yellowy shiny but keep going and it should reach a much paler shine speaking from years of child labour as the offspring of a steam train driver
