Ideas for organising stuff in the hall

What do you do with all the coats, hats, gloves, shoes that sit in the hall so it's not just heaps of shoes on the floor or a mass of hats scarves and gloves etc?
Our shoes sit in a damp muddy pile on the floor, our gloves and hats are cluttering up the top of a bookcase. Our coats are on a set of coat hooks but there more on the backs of chairs and piled up on another bookcase upstairs as well as in a cupboard on hangers.

We're getting an extension done which will give us a new kitchen/ dining rooms and a utility room and the idea is that we'll come in via the back door straight into the utility room with muggy shoes and wet coats etc the hall will then be less cluttered. I want to start collecting ideas for how best to manage shoes coats etc so I can influence the layout of the utility room while it's still being designed and built and also how best to organise stuff in the hall

Several shoe racks (5 tier and 2 tier) plus two sets of 6 coat hooks. Chest of drawers for hats, gloves, waterproofs, scarves. Basket on top for random crap which gets gone through every few months and sorted.

I have a bit of a coat problem, I seem to collect them. The 12 hooks aren't enough and I keep nagging DH to put up absent lower down so DC can reach to put theirs away.
The things that are meant to be in the hall aren't the problem here, it's all the other stuff that tends to be dumped there!

Shoe racks.
You can only wear one coat/hat/pr of gloves a time, what are the others out for?

just5morepeas · 03/01/2018 18:18

I have coat hooks on the wall with a shoe rack/bench underneath for storage and for sitting on to put your shoes on.

I want to put up a high shelf above the hooks and will put baskets on this to store hats/scarves/gloves/lunch boxes whatever in.

I also use command hooks a lot in my utility and have one for my umbrella, one for my lint remover, one for the kids school bags and a couple of hooks lower down so my kids can reach them to put their own coats on. Sounds like a lot but doesn't take up much room.

We have A 6 shelf bookcase in the hall. The shoes go directly on to it. We have baskets on the top shelf for hats scarves gloves etc. And hooks at each end for the children to hang coats and schoolbags on.
We are a family of 6 2 adults 2 adult teenagers and 2 primary age children.

Thanks everyone. I need to get thinking and organising don't I? Where did you get your shoe racks from?

We have a coat rack. We only have 1 coat each on it, the rest are in the wardrobes.
We don't keep shoes in the hall. My shoes stay in the bedroom, as do ds's. So the only pair downstairs literally just overnight are dh's. I can't stand clutter and stuff.

Ikea Kallax - a big 4x4 unit. Baskets for gloves/hats/torches/general random crap on the top two rows and shoes piled up on the bottom. Then lots of coat hooks - some up really high for the coats that don't get worn too often and some very low ones that ten kids can reach.
That's the plan anyway. Still end up with shoes and coats all over the floor next to the unit instead.

If you have space, put a clothes rail in the utility with coat hangers on. That way you have plenty of room for all the coats without them being on top of one another.
In our house shoes go up into people's bedrooms (except wellies / walking boots).

Have you considered shoe cabinets? IKEA has several but so do other stores. They can be good not only for shoes, but also for winter accessories. I also like the idea of baskets or boxes on top of a shelf. This could be a wall mounted shelf with hooks, or a full coat rack with a shelf on top.

Most importantly, get everyone into good habits. All the hooks and hangers in the world don't help if people don't use them.

IKEA shoe cabinet - the white one.

Fits our hall perfect and helps to make things very tidy.

Pinterest is a great way to get ideas for stuff like this (and to lose hours and hours from your day).

I have a rail under stairs for coats on hangers.
At one end I have a hanging shoe storage thing for gloves hats and scarves

I think a rail is better than hooks as coats don't get buried

We have 4 high pegs for adult coats and 14 low pegs. The DCs have 4 low pegs each for school coats/weekend coats/hoodies that are slung on just before they go out the door/specific hoodies for sports etc (not enough wardrobe space upstairs for all the hoodies) and their school bags. All the other low pegs are used for bags for hobbies (dance stuff/hockey stick bag/allotment bag etc). We have a 4 tier shoe rack plus other shoes lined up under the low pegs. A basket for gloves on the top shelf of the shoe rack. We all seem to be the type of people who wear several different coats / pairs of shoes at different times of the same day so we need to keep them out but do put winter stuff away in summer and vice versa. Hats are a problem, DD collects them, they just end up on pegs on top of coats.

Thank everyone for some great ideas. I think I need to do some lurking on the storage section of Ikea
