And it does actually work! I'd managed to push the paper round the curve in the pipe, but I couldn't get it any further, and googled in desperation. Leave it after you tip the water in, it might not clear immediately.

Will definitely try that op - thanks! We have a toilet that gets blocked regularly and DH has developed a home made plunger using a broom with a plastic bag on the end. Works but very noisy and messy!

Alternatively boiling water is very effective (imo)

And a wire coat hanger can also be your friend in these circumstances (I have teenage boys 🙄)!

Washing up liquid and a dishwasher tablet (left in for a while) worked when my kids blocked the loo

It definitely only works if it's just paper blocking it. I tried it today and still had to go in there up to my elbow. 😷
