I want to put powder detergent straight into the drum....

When I put powder in the drawer it never dissolves properly and there's always lots left once wash has ended so I want to put it directly into the drum, but do I put it in first before the washing (worried it will fall through the holes in the drum), in the middle (so put some clothes in first then powder then rest of load), or shall I put it on top of the clothes once all in??

I pop a scoop on top of the washing once it’s all in the drum. I’ve never had a problem doing it this way

poisonedbypen · 24/11/2017 12:47

I put it under the clothes on the assumption that that's where the water comes in, but it probably doesn't matter.

RatRolyPoly · 24/11/2017 12:49

I haven't done this myself but I hear lots of people do. I guess you should put it in the middle of the clothes or on top. Once the machine starts filling nothing goes out of the holes (or washing liquid would simply disappear!) until the drain bit of the cycle so as long as you keep the powder on top of the clothes before turning it on it should be fine I think.

Hopefully someone will come along who actually does this :)

x post! I'm a slow typer Grin

Once the water is in the drum it is in and out of the holes so dissolved washing powder will be too! I would put it in first so that is has more of a chance to dissolve and do its stuff. If you put it in the middle of the load it might clump up a bit, or not, I am only guessing.

HardAsSnails · 24/11/2017 12:53

It's possible you're using too much powder in the drawer. I just tip powder in the front of the drum after loading, but always less than recommended.

mintmagnummm · 24/11/2017 12:56

Thanks everyone. I know it's definitely not because I'm using too much.
Hmm 🤔 decisions decisions lol

I find gel works better than powder imo .Aldi does a good one

PurplePillowCase · 24/11/2017 13:06

I do.
in our old place water pressure was very low and it never got the powder out of the drawer.
so it became a habit.

it works and the drawer never gets manky.

Tiddlywinks63 · 24/11/2017 13:07

I've been putting it directly in the drum, on top of the laundry, without any issues for years.
Go for it (and use half of the so-called recommended amount unless the clothes are really filthy).

mintmagnummm · 24/11/2017 16:17

Thank you. Wat do u all use to measure amount with? There's nothing in my powder box to do it with

The washing machine engineer I had out actually recommended putting powder in the drum with the clothes rather than the drawer

EBearhug · 24/11/2017 16:41

My mother's wm engineer always recommended putting powder in the drum, so I do, too. (Have never had my own wm engineer - is it a sign of being grown up?)

I put it in first and joggers the drum so it goes through the holes (mostly so I know I don't have big clumps which might not dissolve, because at one point, the cupboard I kept the wash powder in was damp.) Then I stick the clothes in and turn it on.

mintmagnummm · 24/11/2017 17:14

Thanks everyone I'm going to put it in the drum before the clothes.
