Cleaning a greasy, dirty kitchen floor

DH and I are both in our 60s and both ill and disabled. We have really got behind with the housework and the place is in a mess. To try and sort things out, we have made a list of essential jobs that we need to do and the kitchen floor is pretty near the top! It is thick with grease and grime. The floor is tiled, but they are quite old and I am concerned about damaging the surface of the tiles.

A few years ago, we bought a steam cleaner, but that doesn’t do a good enough job. It doesn’t cut through the grime. As we cannot get down on hands and knees and scrub, can anyone suggest a really good machine that would do the job?

The carpets are in a bad way too, so if it would sort these out as well that would be great, although we wouldn’t mind buying something else to tackle these.

Can you hire a professional carpet cleaning company to give the floors the once over ? They will have heavy duty equipment and can get the floors into a condition it would be easier to maintain. If not supermarkets and diy stores rent out machines bit you may find them heavy to use.

To be honest you need to get someone to scrub the tiles with fairy washing up liquid and cut through the grease and then use a mop n bucket with flash ( very good for floors and with grease) and boiling hot water to go over tiles again . I mop my kitchen floor daily with flash and it cleans it brilliantly and cuts through grease and dog paw prints etc etc although my floor doesn't really get greasy as not often cook with fat xx

Add washing soda to a floor cleaner like Flash, but be prepared to wash at least twice with a hot rinse.

It may be worth doing as PP have suggested and getting professionals in for a one off deep clean.

I would maybe get someone professional in to do it for you? Probably won't need that for the tiles just a normal cleaner and ask them the concentrate on that and then you could just mop daily?

I have one of these mops as I find them so easy to use, just pour cleaner and water in the top and squirt the liquid out, the pad on the bottom is also machine washable so I was on a really hot wash and also soak in boiling water and bleach to keep clean

Thanks to you all for your ideas. I would agree that a lot of elbow grease, plus Flash or similar, plus a lot of hot water would be the best method. I think I will have to call on our adult sons and stand over them a bit. They won’t mind too much. We are too ashamed of the general state of our house to get professionals in. Thanks again.

Sugar soap is brilliant on grease. I would recommend using that to cut through the grease first - you can buy it in a trigger spray for a few pounds.

There is actually a product called “elbow grease” (yes really! ) that is specifically for breaking down grease. It’s brilliant and not expensive. I stock up when I can find it.

Elbow Grease is not as good as sugar soap ime.

Ask amongst friends and family if anyone has a carpet cleaner you could borrow. Not much use for the kitchen but will be a start for the rest of your floors.
