Steam mops

I do so hate mopping. Alas, i’ve got a weaning crawler and a combination of solid wood and tiles downstairs.

Is a steam mop less of a faff? does it leave the floors super wet? do you have to scrub??? and most importantly if you like yours what make/model is it?

To be honest, I've fallen out of love with mine. You have to sweep every crumb off the floor first, and while it would loosen the porridge you'd need to wipe it up separately. The tiles feel cleaner afterwards, and they're fine for the odd splat mark. I've gone back to mopping, I hate it, but it works.

@Callmecordelia do you mop with a bucket (my true hatred... so much wetness) or have had success with a swiffer or microfibre thingy??

I mop with a bucket on the tiles. I hate it . I am afraid having a second baby was the final straw - he's grown into a toddler and loves throwing food. I've just bought a couple of cheap shower curtains and I'm going to put them under the high chair (after I can face getting the bucket out and scrubbing it properly, no point putting them over filth) to protect the floor and chuck in the wash easily.

I like my steam mop. I've had three kinds, the green super whizzy one from qvc- that one kept breaking and leaking water everywhere so I gave up after three replacements and got my money back, a cheap one from asda that seemed to leave burnt trails on the floor and finally a Vax one which I love. So much easier than mopping, i put some disinfectant on the pad, plug in and it's done really quickly. You do need more than one cloth/pad thingy and it only comes with One, that has been the only slight issue.

I use a microfiber mop head. I boil a kettle pour the boiling water over the mop head and ring out. As the water is super hot it dries pretty fast. I also tend to stand in tea towels and that helps dry it faster.

Has whizzy rollers that rub the floor. It puts down clean water on rollers and sucks up dirty water
It doesn’t put down enough water so I throw some on floor. This means that dirty tank needs emptying more frequently as it’s not a large capacity but I think it’s the best thing I’ve had for kitchen floor
Can put rollers in washer
Need to clean under where rollers go as crap from floor can get stuck where the sucking up of water/ debris happens

My Vax steam mop came with 3 pads and a duster thingy.

I just bought a Shark liftaway vacuum and it came with a free steam mop which also lifts away to be a clothes steamer so I will be trying that out soon and able to review that too. (although I do like my Vax one especially with 3 boys and associated football, rugby, golf shoes/boots etc!

I prefer it to proper mopping.

Oh wow that karcher thing looks fearsome @abitoflight, and I’ve got about £50 inJL vouchers kicking about...

They are pricier than steam mops but the dirt they pick up is satisfying

@Callmecordelia I was considering putting something like that down but then I started thinking about how I would clean that... then I thought about my mum and dad’s house and said “ah, I know, I’ll get two Labradors and a working cocker” but then remembered I’d have to clean up after those buggers too! I’m never having a second baby.. well maybe when I marry my second husband, the sheik, and acquire a domestic team!

It doesn’t soak the floor (I do that by throwing extra water on!) and not hot although you put hottish water in so it’s just microfibre rollers whizzing high

went to John Lewis to see if I could find a beautiful yellow beast to handle alas i could only find a lovely yellow window(?) hoover(?) which I’m sure is lovely(?) if you’ve got loads of time, cupboard space, and windows. will do further research tonight.

Robot mop - they exist

I've bought and got rid of 2 steam mops over the years. Mopping with a normal mop gets a much better result with less faff. What has made a massive difference is buying a Dyson v6 chargeable type Hoover. Whips up any crumbs with the nozzle attachment and I usually whizz round with it once if not twice a day if I see crumbs or bits. Floors are a lot cleaner when i actually do mop and look a lot better in between.

I use mine alllll the time. It doesn’t work on Lino but I can deal with getting on my hands for the bathroom.
I have a Murphy Richards 9-in-1. Lost all the attachments on the last house move so it’s just a 1-in1 now . Think it cost about £90 ish about 5 years ago and has been used for a mix of wood and tiled floors. It works perfectly fine and the container of water is more than enough to do my lounge and kitchen.
It does a good job, the only bits it doesn’t get is right in the corner, so I do have to wipe round the edge of the room with a wipe .
Genuinely the best thing ever. The floor isn’t wet once you’ve finished with it, and mine has a couple of cloths for the bit that touches the floor so they can be chucked into the wash after each use.

I've just gone back to a mop and bucket. My steam mop didn't get right up to the edges, and didn't fit in the little gaps like down the sides of the toilets which is obviously essential. I do like the way it cleans in that it doesn't soak the floor and feels really clean without using lots of chemicals (I have a crawler too)

I have the Morphy Richards 720025 steam mop. It also has a handheld section which can be detached. Had it around 9 months and very pleased with it both on hard floors and used handheld to clean car seats and it was fab. In the past I've had 2 Lake land floor steamers. This is much sturdier and love the detachable bit. Would never go back to mopping.

It's much quicker than mopping and much less faff. Dries very quickly.

I always think an ordinary mop just swishes the dirt around to a different place.
You squeeze the dirty mop into the increasingly dirty water. Yuck.
