What's wrong with my Dyson V6?

Oh wise ladies of Mumsnet, what's wrong with my V6? It keeps stopping and starting every second, despite being fully charged. I've emptied it and will now wash the filters as per the instructions. But maybe somebody can help in the meantime?

Mine did that when the boost button was on, but was ok when on normal.
However, it did sort itself out once I cleaned the filters.

I have the DC59 and had this happen twice. Does it happen just with the large motorised head on or all attachments?

If it’s just with the big head on it is probably the motor in the head. I’ve just had to get a new one myself, got a brand new genuine one for £43 on eBay. Unless it’s in warranty of course.

If it does it whichever attachment you use it’s likely to be the connection points which need cleaning. Take off the stick (I know all the technical terms!). At each end there are little metal connector points, blow them and then wipe over. Take the dust bin off the main Hoover bit completely. Turn it upside down and right at the top are 2 tiny metal squares right under the handle. On mine it’s usually these that are filthy and need defluffing. I clean them by putting a slightly damp cloth round the thin end of a teaspoon and shoving it through the gap.

Hope that helps!

it's a dyson. that's what's wrong.
they are just not very well made and overpriced.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 24/10/2017 09:49

Well that’s a helpful reply Confused

Richak · 24/10/2017 09:52

There is something stuck in the tube/the bottom bit. Have a look.

SloanePeterson · 24/10/2017 09:53

When mine did this it was the filter that needed a damn good clean. I've never washed mine per se, I just take it all apart and bash it over the bin, it's amazing the crap which it accumulates. It's also worth taking the spinning brush out of the floor bit (technical) and defluffing that too. No problems since I started doing this regularly x

ToddlersAndCoffee · 24/10/2017 09:56

Mine did this and still does if the actual rotating bar is blocked (take the bar out and check the hole that the stuff goes up) also check the Hoover tube after you've taken the whole rotating head unit off

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 24/10/2017 09:56

Sloane - I’ve never washed my filter in 18 months! I do the bin bashing too! I’m going to wash it now!

Oh yeah forgot to check the tube. Mine did it another time with a baby wipe stuck up the tube! I also clean the brush regularly and have to cut my hair off it which wraps round the brush (long back hair).

I’m sure the answer must be here now!

Let us know op! X

Loving all the technical terms!

Its not a Shark! Switch I promise you won't be disappointed

We had problems with our V8 and the Dyson support guy said there’s only two things that can go wrong, the battery or the motor.

We’d only had ours 4 months so still in warranty and he sent us both parts. They arrived a couple days later and we swapped the old for the new. Turned out it was a battery problem. Yours sounds more like a motor issue though, ours suddenly dropped from full charge to not turning on at all.

ggirl · 24/10/2017 10:08

there's something stuck inside somewhere

chloechloe · 24/10/2017 10:26

Thanks for all the replies, I knew MN would be able to help!

I've taken it all apart for the first time since buying it and found several large muesli chunks (thanks toddler) and a tangled bit of twine which was probably jamming it. I've also washed everything, so now I'm supposed to wait 24 hours before using it. I will also check the stick (am technical too me) as that's the only bit I haven't looked at.

Will report back again tomorrow.

Oh yeah, just remembered I’ve had a new battery too! They really are crap aren’t they? Blush

chloechloe · 25/10/2017 14:23

It's working again hooray! Looks like it just needed a good clean! Thanks for your help ladies!

Singlebutmarried · 27/11/2018 07:26

With my big Dyson I put all non electrical bits thru the dishwasher.

Comes up lovely.

Haven’t done it to the had held yet though

chloechloe · 27/11/2018 14:10

This is bizarre that my old thread has been bumped up again, as it’s playing up at the moment. I’ve checked it twice for blockages which seemed to resolve the problem for a minute or two but then it starts cutting out again. Time to try out all the tips above in turn. Maybe a good soak is in order!?

Exactly the same problem with ours. Tried everything. Cleaned the head, filters etc. This seemed to work for a bit but not for long. We ended up replacing the battery and it's running fine now.

HannahJParrish · 03/01/2021 09:15

You can wash the filters in cold water until it runs clear (without using any detergent or soap). While you should squeeze and twist the long pre-filters to dislodge any dirt inside, you can simply rinse out the post-filter, taking care not to damage the pleats inside

I've just stripped down and replaced the battery on my V6. Very easy to do. Check out videos on YouTube. When you wash the canister be careful as it has electrical components around the rim. New battery was £20odd from eBay and is working great so far. Wish I'd done it a year ago. Disclaimer: do not do this if your machine is still under warranty and check eBay seller's reviews.

sparkle58 · 06/01/2021 16:51

There’s a trick for when it does this:

Unplug the Charger from the electrical socket and then plug back in

Now attach Dyson to the charging unit and press down the On button/trigger for 20 seconds (nothing will happen)

Unplug from the charger and it should now work!
