Deep clean wooden floors

My living room floor and hall is wooden, I don't know what wood it is. I use a steam mop and I am still finding that the bottom of socks etc look grubby.
How would I do a proper deep clean?

Do you use a cleaning fluid or just the mop?
I use Method wood floor cleaner which is really good, conditions the wood and smells gorgeous.

I use the vax steam mop stuff that came with my steam mop. I do have a cheap spray mop from dunelm which I filled with method stuff but the pad on that is always dirty no matter how many times I did it. I think it needs a real good scrub then something to maintain it.
