Slugs INSIDE the house every night

It's gross. Have been battling with the problem for years and can't get rid of them.I can't put Pellets etc down as I have dogs, young children and guinea pigs.

If I see them then I get them out the house - usually over the fence at the bottom of the garden. It's quite a big garden and we have no plants what so ever (we have artificial grass, concrete and decking) so I can't see why they keep coming back.
But most of them seem to come out when I am asleep and go before I wake up. But I wake up to slug trail everywhere Shock

It's gross. I hate it. We have had our flooring changed and re done the skirting boards and we thought that would stop them getting in from under the house which seems to be where they originate from (but not 100% sure) But it hasn't helped much.

How do I get rid of the things for good?

Oh I also put a layer of salt the width of the back door.

goldenclaire · 02/10/2017 12:11

My Mum is ruthless with them. She will 1/4 fill a jam jar with salt and pick up any slugs and drop them in the jar Confused

I once found one sitting on a plate in the (wall-mounted) plate cupboard.

We moved.

I had this in my previous house which had a downstairs bathroom. When we redid the bathroom we found there was a slow leak under the bath. Once this was sorted out, the slugs went away.

I suspect my slugs have been breeding. I have seen big fat ones and small baby ones, but one thing I don't understand is what are the slimy bastards eating assuming they live inside my house?

cottonwoolbrain · 02/10/2017 18:21

I wish you hadn't mentioned breeding slugs.... I just googled slug reproduction and discovered that they can amass up to 90,000 grandchildren.... I really don't want 90000+ slugs in my living room.

I also made the mistake of reading about banana slugs... I shall not spoil the story except to say that the writer hypothisises that in slugs at least smaller penisies are best!! I give you the wonderful world of the banana slug If you're desperate to get to the gory details scroll to the third paragraph!!

Hello - have no suggestions but lots of sympathy as it happens to me every night too - Place marking

sizeofalentil · 02/10/2017 18:27

You can get pet-safe slug pellets from ASDA.

picklemepopcorn · 02/10/2017 18:30

Wonderful thread. I've been trying to ignore it for a year now. Off to find some salt. If that doesn't work, then the night time cellophane slug pellet combo.

Puppymouse · 02/10/2017 18:41

Where do you keep your guinea pig food OP?

When I had mine, slugs always managed to get to the food. It might be if you can put the food outside it might be one less thing to entice them??

butterry · 02/10/2017 19:34

Try using diatomaceous earth, it's safe for pets and humans

They are definitely attracted to crumbs - for me the trails were focused around the kiddie table where my daughter eats and there's crumbs on the carpet. It's sinister how they know when to come out. One night I decided to fall asleep on the sofa - about 1am i switched off the lights and muted the telly. Within 5-10 mins a huge slug was across the carpet - f**ker!!

Sorry I don't have any tips - i used to catch them in the middle of the night changing my ds nappy so id put them in the used nappy bag (I'm not usually that sadistic I just hated them!! ) and threw them out. They definitely diminished in number. I also find they are much worse in summer.

So if you are feeling really determined you could set an alarm for 4am and pick them off one by one!
