Smoke on a cashmere jumper

I bought a brand new cashmere jumper on eBay but it's got a slight smoky smell. I initially thought it was my imagination but I'm sure I'm right. Apart from washing it what can I try to get rid of the smell?

Hang it outside to air. I'd do that before washing it.

Steam it over a bath with some essential oil in it?
