Is there a best type of carpet?

I'm fed up of carpets going flat and losing their plushness. Our carpets are professionally cleaned at least once a year. Dyson vacuumed, typical beige carpet.

Is there a best hard wearing but plush type of carpet? is there even such a thing? is there a best brand of carpet?

It depends what you want, where it is going, etc. The hardest wearing is supposed to be 80:20 wool:synthetic and the heavier the weight of the carpet, the denser the pile and the plusher it should feel. So 60 weight is better than 30, but 30 will be fine in low traffic areas and 60 is great for hallways and stairs. What underlay you have makes a difference to how it feels underfoot and how it wears. Modern foam underlays don't perish like traditional rubber underlay.

A short pile twist carpet in a heathery colour will not show wear as much as longer pile with a sheen in a solid colour.

Thank you Wowfudge. Didn't think anyone had replied. Very informative, I didn't know there was measure for wearing. The carpets are all indoors, bedrooms, landing and sitting room, we're thinking of changing them all at some point. Could we have the same carpet in all of those areas? Also a bug bear of mine is that in the bedroom, the carpet to each side of the bed has worn thinner than the rest of the carpet. Obviously because it gets most wear, but can't understand why when visiting other people's homes I don't seem to notice this same effect. Hmm What are we doing wrong?

ooh after buying a carpet soon so just joining for tips.

Whatever you do don't buy pure wool one. You will never get rid of the moths.

I've been told that the underlay matters more than the carpet. That you can buy a cheaper carpet if you've a fab underlay but not the other way around. Although I'm not sure how that works with pile wear around the bed.

that's interesting about moths. No idead what carpet is down in ours currently but we always have at least one moth flying around.

wowfudge · 08/09/2017 21:03

You don't automatically get moths if you have wool carpets and not every moth is a carpet moth.

If you want the same carpet in different areas choose one you like in a weight suitable for the highest traffic area. Or find a carpet available in different weights and buy the heavier weight stuff for the living room and landing and spend less on the bedroom carpet.

In my experience cost isn't always an indicator of quality. I have a carpet in the living room and got the best underlay and carpet you could get.

It cost a bomb and can't think of a poorer return on investment. It looks immaculate, but when feeling it, there is definitely wear (harder, flatter and just meh).

I have OCD and change things a lot in my home. I also clean way too much.

However, since we got new plush mid grey carpets I hardly Hoover! Shows up nothing at all and looks so nice.

Agree that underlay is very important.
When we first moved in almost 3 yrs ago we got what we could afford at the time and the quality was bad ( 3 bedrooms done in it )
And since getting the new carpet I'm living room and stairs and landing i noticed the difference instantly.

The carpet I have can be bleached but I would never ever do that, would be terrified in case I ruined it.

Lots of my friends have tiles or wood in living room and I think it looks cold.
Nothing better than a freshly hoovered carpet for cosiness Smile
