Cosmetics grime

More household tips please! Any clue on how to get old grime (hairspray etc I think) off metal cosmetics mirrors?

I also have a wooden desk that a darling child has marked forever with a mug stain so any ideas to improve that gratefully received!

Have you tried neat vinegar for the hairspray?

I used astonish oven and cookware paste on my hand held mirror. got the layers of hairspray off in a few minutes. It's multi purpose so can be used on almost anything, I keep trying to find new uses for it hence trying it on my mirror! Also I heard mayonnaise works on mug stains, saw a video on fb of someone doing it

Is the mug stain a ring from heat?

Metal polish (like brasso) will get this out, but a small amount on a cloth and buff. However, it MAY lighten the wood in the area (all woods/finishes are different).
