How do you get a horrible black rust ring off an oak dining table?

I put a fudge tin on my oak dining table the other day. When I removed it there was an awful black ring left on the table. I'm horrified. My dining table is (was) beautiful. I haven't touched the stain, didn't want to make it worse.

Does anyone have any advice.

OMG this is bad, nobody knows! Does this mean I'm stuck with it? My poor poor table, very upsetting.

You might have to sand it down to get rid of it (removing any varnish on the surface first). Dh did something similar to his mother's table and she was livid. We looked for magic lotions and potions that would remove the stain but to no avail. Hope you have better luck.

Thanks Muffin, I was worried that would be the case. Bit concerned about how deep the stain is!
