Views on using toilet rim blocks?

I mean the ones you hang on the rim under the flushing water flow? I always thought they might be unhygienic, but my MIL has these and they kept the toilets smelling fresh on every flush:

I don't want to use the blocks you put in the cistern as I have modern toilets and I've read they can damage the seal.

Anyone use the rim-hanging blocks and think they are good? Many thanks

I use them. But then we "only" clean our toilets once a week.
MN seems to be full of people who bleach their toilets daily.

I used to wonder about hygiene, although I now think I'm not sure what it needs to be hygienic for precisely? I mean, it sits in the toilet...

Anyway, we tried Bloo blocks in the cistern and then tried the Toilet Duck fresh discs, but both wore out quite quickly. I'm now giving these Domestos Power 5 ones a go and quite happy with them. We use the lime one, smells fresh and keeps it more sparkly and clean it seems. Last much longer than the other things, at least 2-3 weeks (lost count Grin).

I think they are awful things and shudder when I see them in use. What happens when someone pees on it (or poos?) You can't clean them so they just stay contaminated. Yuk yuk yuk.

Our plumber told me not to use them as sometimes they fall off and block the drains.
I too use the domestos ones and they do keep your loo fresh.

The Bloo blocks in the cistern are a no no. They destroy the rubber seal fittings as pp has said and then the toilet just keeps running, we found out the hard way and kept replacing the cistern insides :-(
