Where do I store / file all the paper work that comes into the house. Bills, Statements, information that needs to be kept!

i always have piles and piles of it and every 3/4 days I go through it to bin what I can but I spend so much time on this. There must be a filing system or something that I should be using to get this all out of the way.

Help!!!!

get a box file. i have two metal ones, my friend has a large filing cabinet! i put everything in there in different pockets.

well... you need a prper organised filing place for stuff you need to keep. a small filing cabinet or hanging file thingy organised into for eg; car tax, utility bills, bank statments etc..

and be UTTERLY ruthless as it comes in, throwing what you dont need to keep as you go.

have an IN tray where you put letters you need to do something with, but cant at that second, and go through it every few days, weekly at most. again, be RUTHLESS, do whats neccessary or what you want and have time to do right then, or throw it away.

Get a filing cabinet type thing, today, like this

Contact all supplier adn get a) bills paid via direct debit, usually cheaper too
and b) ask for no statements from banks etc if you have online banking

Then, the MINUTE something comes in, read it, and either A) file it (so if it's for info only, it's a gas bill, then file it under utilities) or B) Bin it because it's rubbish/irrelevant or C) action it
There is no other option if you want to be organised.

That's what I do anyway. Touch each piece of paper only once.

DO NOT PUT PAPER DOWN ON ANY SURFACE

If something needs to be kept it is usually pretty obvious what it is. Keep that, put everythingt else straight to recycle without putting it down. Open your post near the recycle box!

MintChocChippyMinton · 24/03/2007 11:21

You must have a proper crosscut paper shredder. Ours is in the kitchen, everything that doesn't get filed in the ring binder (new one for each year, coloured dividers - utility/bank/guarantees etc) gets shredded straightaway.

MintChocChippyMinton · 24/03/2007 11:22

(recycle the shreddings, but don't put anything with personal details straight in the bin)

Thank you everyone. I am on a mission to get this sorted out today.

One thing, the keep it/file it pile just gets bigger and bigger - what can i do about that?

Thanks again

IF you need to keep/file it, do so straightaway. immediately. there should be no pile (sitting there, taunting you, never letting you relax coz you havnt sorted it yet)
