Is there any way to make black clothes BLACK again?

I have two lovely pairs of black tapered trousers from M+S. They are just so comfortable, kind of jersey material and fit so well. I wear them casually with Sketchers etc and can dress them up too fab!.

Anyway, after many washes they are looking a bit dull.

Has anyone any ideas as to how to make them really black again? BTW I hand wash them all the time, they only take an hour to dry.

I love the Dylan washing machine dye

Used it on a fave pair of faded skinny jeans and they turned out fab

Also dyed an old pair of white converse. Came up great

What kind of material are they made from ?

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 06/07/2017 16:57

*dylon not Dylan!

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 06/07/2017 16:58

Canvas shoes and soft cotton type jeans rather than the rigid denim

thebigbluedustbin · 06/07/2017 17:13

Dye them?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/07/2017 17:15

Velvet black dylon, from Home Bargains or similar.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Much appreciated.

The material is stretchy jersey like. So comfortable and such a great fit, I want to keep them forever! Typical, they are not in stock anymore sigh.

Do you think the dyes would work on the material I TRIED to describe above!

Thanks, you are so good.

have a look at the washing label as it will say what the fabric is made from. If it is 100% cotton (unlikely) then you can use dylon and you will have good results. If it is mostly cotton but with some elastane for the stretch you can still use it but the colour won't be so uniform

Gatekeeper · 06/07/2017 19:04

you can buy dye for synthetic fibres
have a look here for different sorts of dyes and advice Smile

Just had a look. 95% viscose 5% elastane.

Guess I will just pretend they are going grey like myself!

thanks.

Viscose will dye, Dylon velvet black is great.
I've dyed several pairs of black trousers that weren't black black even when new. Material is 76% polyester, 20% viscose and 4% elastane but the result's really good.

I've seen black fabric dye in Wilkos before - never used it and don't know the price but am thinking of getting some for a pair of faded jeans.

@Gatekeeper, thanks for that link! I really like Dylon (and in fact did a French Lavender job today), but the polyester stitching is always awkward, so the poly dye stuff is really useful!

3luckystars · 09/07/2017 20:11

Dye them, if they are wrecked anyway you have nothing to lose!
I dyed loads of things and they all turned out fantastic. I love it.

Thank you for the link to that site Gatekeeper. Bookmarked for future reference! The Dylon I can get locally but the polyester dye is a real find.
