Do steam mops actually clean carpets?

So I've got this steam cleaner www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01306CWE2/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza?tag=mumsnetforum-21
And for the price am very impressed. It has a carpet glider attachment. How does it work? There's no carpet shampoo or anything. Does it lift the dirt?

I have tried and I didn't think it made any difference to the carpet. Although, I have thought that maybe using a bit of steam on it might loosen the dirt a bit and then give a better result if I gave the stains a wee scrub with carpet shampoo. I thought it might work better than the shampoo on it's own. Mind you, that's just a theory as I haven't actually tried it...

Steam mops sort of 'refresh' carpets. They might kill some bacteria but they don't clean the carpet.

I think it works as a freshen up for carpets, rather than a clean.

I love my steam mop though, I put Zoflora in the tank with the water.
