How do you clean a mattress?

I've had my mattress for two years and realised it's never been cleaned in that time. Eugh.

What's the best way to get it clean? Google suggests emptying a shit tonne of baking soda on, leaving overnight then vacuuming it in the morning?

Does it need cleaning? Honest question, I have a waterproof mattress protector, then a quilted mattress protector and a sheet between me and the mattress. Not sure how dirty it could have got - I have never given cleaning it a thought!

I do what is in your OP when the DC have had an accident otherwise I just vacuum ours occasionally! I suppose you could steam clean it from time to time.

i febreezed ours the other day. Next time I change the bedding I'm going to steam mop it.

But that's about it.

Thanks team. I ended up just vacuuming it, it actually didn't smell at all (apart faintly of st tropez.....)

I did however wash my duvet and pillows in the machine and did my bedding too, plus pulled out my bed and vacuumed and damp dusted EVERYWHERE and have had the windows wide open to air out. So now the bedroom is delightfully fresh scented
