Remind me - what do you do when there is just TOO MUCH to do?
Do you set the timer and do 10 minutes in each room?
If I had a week in each room I don't know if I'd begin to sort/clean this house out!
wahhhhhhhhh!

Flylady's crisis cleaning plan .

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2007 20:34

Thanks Jackieno! I knew I'd read something like that somewhere...
(guilty of losing timer quite often!!)

Have to say, I haven't actually tried it, but it looks as though you'd see progress everywhere quite quickly, which is motivating in itself. Good luck.

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2007 20:39

I am one of those people who gets really badly sidetracked.
Also my household systems/storage is not good so I'm always grappling with too much stuff everywhere. Does everyone just have too much stuff? Other people must just get rid of more than I do!

JackieNo · 18/03/2007 20:40

Doing the timer thing should work well, then, less chance of getting sidetracked, hopefully.

I definitely need to throw away or get rid of loads of stuff. You're not alone.

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2007 22:21

I've just started putting ds's pictures in scrap books again - this feels like progress!
Also I spend a lot of time on recycling and flylady says NO! wait til your more Advanced! I'm sure she's right but I feel quite passionate about recycling!

tortoise · 18/03/2007 22:23

You have to declutter before anything else.
Then the timer works well. Do a room at a time (except normal bits like hoovering maybe).
And come and join us FLY ladies on the FLY thread. We will motivate you and keep you going!

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2007 22:25

I think I may be too remedial for your thread - you are most impressive!

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 18/03/2007 22:26

I have a box that I decluttered IN THE CAR that I am hesitating about......!

OP posts:
tortoise · 18/03/2007 22:29

Impressive? No! Lol! In need of lots of motivation from others? yes!

Get that box to charity shop/recycling/where ever it needs to go and don't think about it anymore!

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2007 22:36

but.... there's something in there I'm thinking about
MAKING into something else.............

(it's so sad, is there any hope for me???!!!???)

[hmmm]

OP posts:
tortoise · 18/03/2007 22:38

Lol Sounds like me! Will you ever get round to making it into something else?? How long have you thought about doing it?

ipanemagirl · 18/03/2007 22:41

I
AM
TOO
ASHAMED.....

To be honest - I spend far too much time on mumsnet to get much done. Think I have to knock in on the head again for a few months!!

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 18/03/2007 22:41

But I will try to do some flying tomorrow and will check in too!

OP posts:
JackieNo · 18/03/2007 22:42

You could set the timer for being on Mumsnet too - just 15 mins at a time.

staceym11 · 18/03/2007 22:50

Ipanemagirl DONT PANIC!

If you feel you have too much to do all at once, DON"T DO IT!

Simply break it into chunks and do 1 bit at a time. Very soon it all comes together. My MIL's maxim is 'A job a day and it goes away.

The clutter clearing is a good starting point. Job 1, Take a bin liner and go round the house (OK, break it down to floors if easier) and put anything that needs throwing away in it.

Finished? Right, put the bag in the bin and forget about it...JOB 1 DONE

Next step, find stuff you can give to charity shops/pass on/sell on eBay. Do the bin liner bit again, then get rid JOB 2 DONE

2 jobs down, feeling better?

Easiest bit to start on is the bathroom cos you use it all the time. Plus it's probably your smallest room. Give it a good clean, stand back and admire! JOB 3 DONE

Do you feel like you've achieved? Now every morning it is so easy just to scrub round the loo and wipe the sink out when you've finished (like a sink on a plane). Now you can shut the door and forget about it.

Now just pick and choose what you need to tackle next (bedroom, DKs' rooms, Kitchen etc etc) compartmentalise big rooms (The kitchen in my house is broken down to worktops, cooker, table, fridge, cupboards, floor) and tackle 1 bit at a time.

And be sure to let the FLYladies know. And if you haven't managed anything, let us know and we'll give you a hug.

Before you know it everything simply comes together and becomes 2nd nature, Like when you go downstairs always take the laundry with you and bung it in the washer. Before entering the FLY zone, my house was an unfathomable, unsurmountable dump. Now I'm rather house proud and never need to apologise for it's appearance. I don't spend anymore time on it, I just work smarter rather than harder.

Careful of FLY lady, as good as she is she's a touch manic and prescriptive. She's good for ideas but FLY threads are good for realistic motavation!

All the best with it and see you on FLY soon
xx

thank you very much grouchyo! very good advice. I had an excellent morning getting ready for a friend to visit and really cleared some space and put some stuff in bags! Also cleared everything out of the entrance/hall area - huge psychological difference. I immediately wasn't feeling irritated by the newspapers, bags, toys shoes just tripping me up at the front door.
feng shui is right about some stuff!!
big thanks again will get on that thread.
