Removing dog odour from a large deep shaggy rug?

I've got a huge shaggy rug that is bliss to sink your feet into. However, my cocker spaniel loves to sleep on it and roll around on it!

I've gradually noticed that it's starting to smell a bit. He has never peed on it as he is very well trained, but the rug is beginning to smell like a wet dog! The rug is very heavy and large so I wouldn't be able to easily move it to put it in the bath etc.

Any ideas on what to do/ product to buy to get rid of the odour?

Massage lots and lots of baking soda into the rug, completely cover it until you almost can't see the original colour of the rug. Leave for 24 hours and then hoover off. That would be my first step - it might be enough to remove all the odour.

Thanks. I've bought a tub of bicarbonate of soda and sprinkled it on. The thing is the pile is so deep, I think even my trusty dyson is going to struggle getting it all hoovered up!

Have you got a fence or a wall you can hang it over? I did that and washed it with dog wash and a hose. It smelled great and dried in the sun.
