Fluff around washer / dryer seal

We have a combination washer / dryer. It has a buildup of baked fluff around and behind the drum seal. I think it's the fuzzy bits that fall off the clothes in the wash, getting baked into felt during the drying cycle. I clean the seal regularly, but this is behind the seal, towards the drum. I can reach bits of it with my nails and scrape chunks out (sporner alert), but that's not exaclty practical, and I'm wondering how deep does the rabbit hole go. I also feel that the drying is not as good as it used to be. The machine is only a year old but we use it a lot. Did anyone have the same problem? Any advice?

I guess you clean all the filters well every time? Have you descaled it recently? We live in a grimly hard water area and I have to descale my washer a lot to keep it scum-free; as well as using water -softening powder in the wash itself, and that's without the baked-on-felt prob of a washer/dryer.

Yes, filters cleaned regularly, and are usually not too grubby. Have never noticed a buildup from hard water. Just this baked in fluff now that we use the dryer a lot!!
