Mattress on floor

Hello!
My DH and I were carpeting out bedroom so everything came out. We used to sleep on an iron bed with a slatted base. Pocket coil mattress with padded pillow topper.

Popped the mattress on the floor for one night as it was getting late and would take ages to put bed together again.

We have kept it on the floor now for a week as much more comfortable. Think the Japanese are into something with their lie beds.

Incidentally the mattress could do with being replaced but now on solid base (carpeted floor) it's more comfortable. Husband has spinal issues and wants to keep it that way

Looks a bit odd on the floor as used to a high bed? But the mattress is quite deep luckily!

What do other people Think? Not that I'm bothered but neighbour was like " that's odd is it comfortable"

One word, spiders - and also bugs on the floor,

Also most matresses need to breathe, so it may get smelly if it doesnt have a vent from below, the japanese air their futons and roll them away in the day.

Fine , but you will need to lean it against the wall every morning.

When you wake up tomorrow lift it up. It'll likely be warm on the floor underneath, if not damp too.

If you don't lift it daily it'll go mouldy.

Replace the mattress.

I have been sleeping on a super king size mattress on the floor for 18 years. It is not moody or smelly and it is very comfortable. People fuss a lot about nothing, in my opinion.

Timeforabiscuit · 08/05/2017 16:13

claraschu might yours be a side venting one?

Apart from anything else, this looks nicer. I'd miss the storage underneath though. I have wondered if the airing thing is a bit of a myth, if the japanese get on fine with futons rolled up all day, but it would be safer to have some ventilation especially on carpet.

Whatever works for you. I guess with slats, mattress and topper you had 3 layers of "give", and maybe 2 suit you better.

One of my teens is doing the mattress on the floor thing right now. The other one did it for months last year.

Personally I'm creeped out by things with lots of legs so prefer my bed to be raised

Just a normal mattress on a normal wooden floor. It was the best way to co-sleep with our kids comfortably, and we just never changed it when they got older, as it suited us...

I am not sure if this would make it less comfy again, but if you are worried about ventilation, Ikea do a v cheap slatted base that just lifts the mattress off the floor a bit.

Question re ventilation: how does this apply to divan beds where the mattress is on a hard surface? Are they different from the mattresses used on slatted bases?
