oil on carpets

I think someone has walked oil off the street onto my sitting room carpet (so I'm guessing it's motor oil.) There are black, sticky spots on the carpet (which is pale and relatively new - argh!) Has anyone any experience of removing oil out of carpets without taking the colour out too?

see if you can get in touch with a specialist carpet cleaner as they have a product that will do just that, but I cannot remember what it is called - whatever you do, don't rub it!
